I would like to buy an external LCD display to go with my MacBook, on account of I find the ~114ppi resolution of its built-in screen is just too dang high for continued use at my desk.

Ideally, I'd like to buy a 1280x960 19" DVI display, but they don't seem to exist, only 1280x1024.

On CRT monitors, I know that 1280x1024 would annoy me as the tube itself is still 4:3 ratio and so using 1280x1024 results in a malformed image.

Does anyone know if this is true of 1280x1024 LCDs? Or do they be sensible, have an actual physical ratio of 5:4? If the latter, then 1280x1024 wil be fine; ~87ppi resolution makes me happy, even better than the 90ppi on my eMac (1152x864).

Lastly (sorry to go on) can anyone recommend any particular brand or model? I've been looking on eBuyer and this model seems promising... Though one with a built-in powered USB hub would be even better.

I've seen several 19" 1440x900 widescreen displays - the same resolution and aspect ratio as the MacBook Pro and 17" iMacs. Viewsonic makes one with a reported 8 ms response time.

Dell's 19" 1907FP LCD is 5:4 and 1280x1024 for $309 with an integrated USB hub.

I think you can safely assume that any reasonably modern LCD has square pixels. In general, brands aren't that important, since there are only a few panel manufacturers. Any 19" screen with 8 ms or better gray-to-gray is probably a good monitor, but don't miss the widescreen options of 17" and 20" screens.

Thanks for everone's replies. For now, I use an ancient 17" CRT monitor at 1280x960 with my MacBook and it's okay for now. When I go to university and move into halls, I shall buy a 1280x1024 LCD, so I put off looking for now.

With regards the square pixels, that did seem like it should be the case, but since people were willing to have rectangular ones on their CRTs I thought I would double check.
