Two in a week stating they came up with some entity which owes us a nice chunk of cash. One company wants 40%, while the other wants twenty. Any ideas on how they got that info, and how I can do the same?
Thanks

Maybe because there are thousands of people who look on here and occasionally someone might know something about things other than macs. I was hoping for someone who had a link to a database which would find this cash without an agency taking a chunk.
We found it ourselves all the same.

You're not making any damn sense.
"a link to a database which would find this cash without an agency taking a chunk. "
What cash ?
What business ?
What transactions ?
Don't you think you need to share a little more before people can help ?
Or do you think we're all psychics ?

Not to jump on the OP but I can see where he's coming from here. I guess he's thinking, how did these two companies that have no links with us find out that two other companies owed us money.
So not such a stupid question really.

The letters come from companies that search federal and state databases, find someone who has money owed to them, then charge them a fee for finding it. All of this can be done for free. Unclaimed monies can be found through your state and federal websites. I don't know what state you live in, but you can try just visiting your state controller's website.

Exactly what I was looking for. As I said, we lucked out on the first call, but figured something like this existed.

Are YOU? Seriously, why do you have such a thing for this guy. Anyone with an ounce of reading comprehension skills could understand what the OP was asking. Just because YOU don't know anything about it or because YOU don't understand the question doesn't mean the question is invalid or obscure.
Give it a rest already.

Our maybe the OP could have created a better written post that wouldn't be so vague.
I received two letters this past week that stated I (my family and I, what have you) was owed some funds from an estate (class action/legal settlement, etc). How did the companies that sent these letters find this out? How can I do the same and avoid the fees they wish to charge to help me get that money?
sure is a hell of a lot clearer what is being asked for from forum members.

WTF ? The OP's post made no sense whatsoever, except if someone is like-minded.
E.g. what would he mean by this: ". .. and how I can do the same?"
Is he seriously asking how he could get the same information about money that is owed to him ?
I mean, if he is owed money, wouldn't he know ?
The ONLY reasonable explanation is that the OP has never heard of a scam because surely, there is no "link to a database" that can be searched.
To be honest, I dismissed the thought that the OP could be talking about a scam, because
a) it is so obvious
b) Laminar already brought it up
So I was trying to understand how this could be
a) a reasonable business transaction
while
b) anyone here at MacNN could be helpful with that little actual information given.
Obviously, I should give it a rest, since people seem to post al kinds of fraggin nonesense here in the Lounge these days.

As was stated earlier, there are "finder companies" who search state and federal unclaimed fund databases for unclaimed funds, and then send letters to the people to whom the funds belong saying that they found "money that belongs to them somwehere" and that they can help them retrieve it for a hefty "finder's fee) (20-40% of the amount in the case of the OP).
They don't tell you what it is because that would alert you and you'd be able to get it without paying any fee. Yes, it sounds like a scam.
The OP wanted to know which databases these companies used to find the unclaimed funds so he could search them himself and save himself the fuc--, er "finder's" fees.

Bugger me. Do they check how many times a day you wipe over there too?
The state knows who owes what money to whom? Don't you Land Of The Freers™ find that a little intrusive?

I would like to know what state and federal website would know that someone owes me money.
Because this whole idea doesn't make any sense.
You're telling me that some private companies are required to submit information that they owe me money to a federal or state database, but they DO NOT have to inform me personally ?

No, they only submit the information when all attempts to directly reach you fail.
