My iPod's icon now shows up as a removable disk on the desktop. Why did this happen?

Mine did that once too.

Grab the firmware updater, and "reset" the iPod. That'll erase everything and make it like it was at the factory. If you have data on it, back it up before hand. Next time you start iTunes, it should re-sync with the iPod, so all your music will come back.
