Bout time huh.

Welcome to the 2nd Annual MacNN Film Competition (yes, there was one last year, but few knew about it). The first place you'll wanna go for information about this competition is the community page. I designed this over the past week and I think it's pretty informative. If you have any questions or comments, I'm certainly happy to hear them.

To start things off, I thought I'd post the rules for the competition. Here they be:

General Guidelines:
  • Movies must be in quicktime format.
  • Movies must have been made on a mac.
  • Movies cannot be patently offensive. That means no porn, not a lot of profanity, no hate speech, etc.. If you think you might be in a grey area, contact me.
  • Only one entry per person per category. So you can have up to five entries.
  • Movies should not be bigger than 35MB. I know this is high, but here's the catch: if you post a version over 20MB, you must post a smaller (whether smaller dimensions or heavier compression) version as well. So post a 10 and 20 meg version so we'll all be happy.
  • If you use copyrighted material, be sure to give credit in the movie or on the page the movie is hosted on. If anyone contacts us to remove the material (even though it's not being used for profit) we will do so immediately.
  • If your movie requires the newest version of quicktime (for example: if you use the Sorenson 3 codec), then make sure to mention that in your forum post so that we can reflect that fact on the film competition website.
  • The competition will last from November 16th - January 16th. It may seem long, but since most of you will be busy during the holidays, it's more like a month and a half than two.
  • We can't host your movies here on MacNN. If you need space for your movie, let us know. If you can host someone's movies, let me know that as well. We'll try to work something out for everyone.
  • Yes, you can work in teams.

Entry Guidelines:
  • All entries/discussion will take place in the new (temporary) Film Competition Forum. While you're working on a movie, you can post a thread in that forum and seek help/advice. Final entries, however, need to have their own thread. That thread should be formatted like this...
your topic name should be: (name of movie) - (category number) so it would look like: Peter Pan Drowns in Peanut Butter - #3
  • In progress movies should be formatted: Salami Sandwich Came Alive - In Progress
  • Other threads (such as "how do i do this edit/effect/etc..." can be in whatever format you want. If it isn't related to a movie you're making for the competition, please post it in the Multimedia/DV forum.
  • Once an entry is posted, it will be noted and links will be created on the official MacNN Film Competition page. This will be the place to check if you want to see an overview of all the entries.
  • Replies on entry threads should consist of friendly critiques/praise/showering with kisses. If you enter, I recommend you check your entry threads quite often. It'll be a excellent place to share insights into your work with other budding movie makers.

If you have any questions, let me or Misc know. We're sharing moderation duties so that I don't explode if we get hundreds of entries.
I've been looking forward to this thing for the past 6 months. I can't tell you how excited I am. Let's get this party started right.

Hola everyone!

Welcome to the world of video. Have a blast, but remember that real life is just a step away.

Hey! I like Peter Pan. The trailer for the new Peter Pan looks awesome and retains the same excellent style ot had 15 years ago.

Does MPG format count as well? Linux girls won't be able to see my movie.

I hate to be the materialistic one here, but, I just need to set my priorities....

There's no "prizes" per se, are there?

MPG) If you compress the file into an MPG which QT5 can view, go for it. I'd rather it be an .mov, but if you really must, you can.

Prizes) I haven't mentioned them in the rules because as of now, there aren't any. But....but......I'm going to work on getting some for the winners. If you have any prize ideas, contact me. I'm guessing things like Quicktime Pro keys wouldn't be too good, considering you usually need that even to open some of the applications mentioned in the rules.

What about T-Shirts that say "2nd Annual MacNN Film Competition Winner" on them (and have a logo or some type of picture)? If there are going to be 1st, 2nd and 3rd places the T-shirts could indicate that as well. I know I'd like a T-shirt .

Let us retreat into a huddle temporarily and figure out how much of a prize we can manage.

Word, I'm just curious, how are you gonna keep the word around the main page about the film fest, cause I know it can't always stay in the 'Feature Stories' forever... And well new people come everyday, so i think it's important to make it noticeable.. thoughts?

{edit} i've also updated the main competition page.

i'll be putting up the remaining entries tonight. if you have something almost ready to enter, be advised that i won't have high speed access for about a week (starting Thursday). so we can discuss your movies during that time, but they won't be up on the competition page till the beginning of January.
