'Tis the season and I'm in the spirit. I need some more Christmas music and I need some ideas. What songs you lot like? Not necessarily the standards, although I've heard some pretty good covers of traditional Christmas carols.
My top three favorites:
Fairytale of New York- The Pogues
Father Christmas- The Kinks
Snoopy's Christmas- The Royal Guardsmen
Looking at that short list, I realize one of those songs seems a bit out of place. We'll right that one off as childhood nostalgia

As a rule I don't like Christmas songs. Most of the time they are just crap.
That being said I've always liked The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole.

Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

Nat's version of The Christmas Song is my favorite version. Mel Torme, who wrote it (and was a fantastic singer himself) asked Nat to sing it because he thought Nat's voice suited it better. When he did this, in the 1950s, it was, shall we say, "controversial." But Mel's version is wonderful too.
I like most "non-pop" Christmas songs, and I like more classical ones a lot. I just got a cheapie CD of Enya Christmas songs (on Rhino), "ONLY AT TARGET!" and it starts with Adeste Fidelis. Breathtaking!
Another big favorite of mine is Bing Crosby and David Bowie singing Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy. I bought Martha Stewart's Traditional Christmas album just to get it!

Hmm... now that I think about it, I used to love an iTunes radio stream from a few years ago... XMas in San Fran or something like that. All sorts of irreverent songs. It was a joy to listen to.

I sing Let it Snow ALL DECEMBER LONG! Actually, I get caught singing that song mid-year. I don't know why it's so stuck in my head, but I'll never be able to shake it.

I got the Enya exclusive a few weeks ago, and we got the "Time/Life" 2 disk set last week -- the one that used to be on TV every year. Excellent stuff, with Nat King Cole and all the other favorites. The only thing I'm missing is Andy Williams singing "Most Wonderful Time of the Year."
Beware, though, that some Christmas albums actually have songs about Jebus on them.

I've taken some grief for having Fairtytale of New York as my favorite Christmas song in the past, it seems that some don't find the lyrics
"You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it's our last"
quite appropriate to the season, but I think the song is beautiful regardless. Not everyone's Christmas dreams come true. And would anyone expect any different from Shane MacGowan, the man your dentist warned you about?
If you haven't heard the song, you can give it a listen here.

this is one of my favorites too, but I don't own it. Is there anything else on that Martha thing worth getting?
Christmas Wrapping--a silly song, but somehow it gets me by the end.
I have some compilations of 40s stuff, bing, and a very special christmas 3 that I like.

I got the album through iTunes, but it's apparently a Rhino release. Here's what they say about it. The track list is here:
1. The First Noel - Emmylou Harris
2. 2000 Miles - The Pretenders
3. I Believe In Father Christmas - Greg Lake
4. Silver Bells - The Roches
5. White Christmas - Melissa Manchester
6. Santa Baby - Eartha Kitt
7. Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy - David Bowie & Bing Crosby
8. Merry Christmas Baby - Charles Brown & Band
9. One Bright Star (This Is Christmas Night) - Nicolette Larson
10. Christmas Time - Ray Charles
11. What Child Is This? - Dan Fogelberg
12. Good King Wenceslas - Loreena McKennitt
13. Are You Burning, Little Candle? - Jane Siberry
14. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - Judy Garland
I particularly like Ray Charles and Dan Fogelberg on this one, and the Loreena McKennitt cut is a really nice surprise.
A new favorite of mine is just about anything from Trans Siberian Orchestra, particularly Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" and Christmas Canon. But Wizards in Winter rocks too.
