So a guy with a passing interest in gaming walked around at a Sony event and saw a few things that look pretty cool. Sony's got this in the bag!

Some interesting points about the PS3.

1) The power supply is built in. That is great especially when you think of the 360's.

2) The PSP can connect to the PS3 through wireless and the PS3 can downconvert on the fly HD videos and send them to the PSP. A future ROM update will allow you to connect through the internet to do the same thing.

3) the buttons on the PS3 are touch sensitive like the ones on many Apple products starting with the G4 cube and the current monitors.

And I was about to welcome Sony to 1999 for their touch sensitive buttons, ah well.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

You can still have your fun just hop over to the Wii thread and welcome Nintendo to online gaming and 480p.

Ya many people do care as people make fun of the 360 supply and brag about the Wii's small one. Considering all the problems the 360 had when it first came out because of the huge external supply people will care even more.

The PSP is not a failure and those are pretty strong words coming from you considering you haven't played one or don't own any other game system other than the 360 in the past 20 years. Considering Sony took on a monopoly and a company with a huge market and brand it is nothing short of remarkable they have sold as many as they have.

Or is it you just want to feel better about your 360 + HD-DVD drive?

What problems because of the external power supply?

And I don't think I've heard anyone say "The Xbox 360's power supply is TEH HUGE so I'm not going to buy one".

Well, the PSP is not a complete disaster by any means, and I do think it's fun, but it is definitely a failure in corporate terms. It was supposed to be the core of the Sony portable entertainment space, but it has not come anywhere close to hopes/expectations.

Remember, the PSP wasn't supposed to be a gaming device. It was supposed to be a music player, gaming device, movie playback unit, etc. I think the adoption rate of UMD is a pretty strong indicator...

Or is it you just want to feel better about your 360 + HD-DVD drive?
No worries, cuz I already feel good about the 360 + HD DVD drive. And if I decide the HD DVD drive is underutilized, I can just sell it, and still keep my 360. Not an option with the PS3.

But the HD-DVD drive is basically useless because there aren't HDMI outputs on that thing. So why would you buy it in the first place?

HDMI is irrelevant to me at this time. I own two HDTVs, and neither support HDMI. One supports DVI, but that one isn't actually my primary TV. My primary TV is 1080i component.

P.S. 1080i component on this TV beats out just about every HDMI LCD or plasma I have ever seen. Why? Cuz it's a CRT. As old a technology as CRT is, nothing (mainstream) beats it in terms of contrast ratio. I will eventually replace this CRT with an HDMI-capable TV, but given its beautiful picture, I'm definitely in no rush to do so.

I'd actually prefer a large external power supply if that means a much smaller console. It just gets stuck behind my TV, anyway.

The PS3 isn't much bigger than the 360 especially considering the 360 power adapter is almost the same size of the 360 itself.

I liked the way the N64 did it, with the big power brick attaching at the back.

The Lik Sang thing sucks. Microsoft sued them down a while ago as well, but for better reason... because they were selling mod chips.

Ya... and it even has its own fan believe it or not so as people typically put these on the floor it is sitting on a dusty hot carpet next to the radiator. Much nicer than the PS3 method eh.

It is nearly the same hight as it and half the width. It is as thick and has its own fan and gets hot. It is heavy as all hell.

No it is not the same size that is why I said "Almost".

It is the biggest, ugliest power brick ever made for a game system and the biggest I have seen for any electronic device.

In fact I had to put mine on its own shelf behind the centre channel as there was no room for it on the floor behind the stereo shelf with that nice fan to suck up dust.

The PS3 has it built in and is smaller than the xbox 360 and brick combined and is more powerful. I can't see a downside to that especially once you add on an HD-DVD drive. 360 + powerbrick + HD-DVD easily doubles the size of the 360 itself and that isn't taking into account whatever power adapter the HD-DVD has.

Now you can take out the tape measure and make graphs if you like but combining the bulk from the 360 doesn't equal the PS3. I'll take one part over 3 any day.

The Xbox 360 is something like 6000 cubic cm. The power supply, while big, is only about 1300 cubic cm. ie. The power supply is less than 1/4 the size of the Xbox 360.

Stop making stuff up.

WTF are you talking about?

The way Amazon works is they get allocations of stuff to sell. As soon as they get the OK, they put up that allocation for pre-orders, and let people order it until the batch sells out.

It's of note that this is the SECOND batch of Xbox 360 HD DVD drives that have been allocated. On the weekend they had a batch allocated, and sold out the same weekend. They got the go ahead for second batch, and the pre-orders for that went to number one on the sales chart today.

That sucks majorly. Who are they going to go after now? Play-Asia?

The vast majority of goof-balls posting comments on this over on Digg are going as far as to say that they're boycotting all Sony products.

Hmm...I didn't realize that. Where is the fan on the thing exactly, because I don't see it.

Between the fans coming from my projector and my amp and various consoles, it's a regular 'ol blowfest at my place. Take that as you wish.

He's pro console (all of them), but pro Blu-ray. One wonders if this 360 HD DVD drive launch has his panties in a bunch.

P.S. I'll fully admit I lean toward the HD DVD side, but ironically, early on I would have preferred to get the PS3. I skipped the Xbox 360 when it was released, and waited... and waited... Unfortunately, Sony screwed up the PS3 launch royally so I just said frak it, and got an Xbox 360 in the spring.

Reuters: Microsoft 2006 video game console target holds

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) on Thursday said it has shipped 6 million Xbox 360 video game consoles worldwide since releasing the unit about a year ago.

The company is "confident" it can meet its target to ship 10 million of its next-generation game consoles by the end of 2006, Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell said in an interview.

In July, Microsoft said it had shipped 5 million Xbox 360s.

The software giant, which competes with Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, NEWS, Research) and Nintendo Co. Ltd. (7974.OS: Quote, NEWS, Research) in the video game console market, said 3.6 million units have already been sent to North America, 1.7 million went to Europe and that about 700,000 went to other regions.
