It's time for me to start a blog. I need help though. I want to run it on my new domain and run it from PHP/MySQL. I want an easy template system for making a unique look etc. I also want people to be able leave comments etc.
So what is the best software out there to do this?

iBlog is easy enough. I'm using it with .mac and it fits my needs so far. I've added comments and a site meter as well. Still learning my way around it but it's doing fine so far.

Looking into Wordpress now (testing it out). As for iBlog played with it when it was free with .Mac and has to continually upload etc. Wordpress is the front runer at present.

Another vote for MT. WordPress is fine, but MT has it beat in functionality and features. YMMV of course.

Can't access moveable type. Site has exceeded it's bandwidth. Is it Free, PHP/MySQL? I love out Word Press is PHP/MySQL and XML and CSS.

Ya I did a search. It does seem better. can you guys give me links to your blogs so I can compare? Which version did you buy etc? What constitutes a commercial site (since I want to make money) etc?

One of the good things about MT is that you can use it to create static html pages. It's powering my entire Personal Site. I bought the personal edition myself. You can always download and install the free trial and see if it works for you. There are, to the best of my knowledge, no restrictions on the actual application. The payment system is, or was when I last looked, honour based.

That's good to know. My problem is installing is hard. CGI is so server intensive. I am trying to install it and it's not easy to say the least.

MovableType is well worth the money. I've used it for four years and had no qualms about paying for it. (I got a double discount for being both a beta-tester and for having already donated).

Hi.
I'd just like to add that I use ecto. With BlogSpot. Yea, non-programmer you see. Can only dream. Maybe one day.
The author of ecto seems like a cool dude. Versiontracker.

Check the installation guide. MT can be installed in multiple configurations. I am running my install with a mySQL database. It's easier than it looks.

I use WordPress as well. It's pretty easy to maintain and install/upgrade.

It is easy to install if CGI is enabled, and you have DB:MySQL installed (which I don't on default Panther Server nor Tiger Client). so off to shared hosting I a go.

Ah yes, ecto. I designed the icons there you know Well, until he decided he wanted an all aqua-look instead and I passed on the re-design. The application-icon is still mine though. And yes, Adriaan is cool

I highly recommend Nucleus CMS. It's PHP, pretty user-friendly, customizable, expandable, completely open-source, and has a whole support group behind it. It is my software of choice for my own blog.

Thanks for the info. Testing on my Dev server - install was super easy. wish I had known this before I signed up for paid hosting. seem nicer then the CGI blob that Movable Type is (was a real pain in the *** to install.
