Notebook: Tentatively, I'd get a ThinkPad. I say tentatively because I'm still not sure if Lenovo intends to maintain the same level of quality with the line that IBM did.

Desktop: Voodoo or Falcon-Northwest. Both are extraordinarly well built systems, down to every detail. Quite expensive, but you really do get what you pay for.

Not too big on Alienware. Their cases are absolute garbage (seriously) and their systems cost too much now that the Alienware name has been spread.

Alienware is over-hyped, over-priced crap. You could build your own system for at least 1/3 less at equivalent spec.

If it were a desktop, BYO. Laptop, probably ThinkPad. I can't say I know the difference, since I never bother looking at how the other half computes.

I have one of these from ABS...AMD 64 FX-55, 1 GB RAM, GeForce 6800 Ultra. Good solid, fast machine. Fair price.

Perfect for your Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 needs.

Definitely another Shuttle (have 2 of those little suckers already) - some of the nicest PCs I've seen so far. I'd probably get the ST20G5 and load it up with a dual-core AMD processor and an Radeon X850. Add 2 gigs of decently fast RAM to that and you'll definitely have one of the quicker PC's out there.

Now if it wasn't for the OS ...

ThinkPad most likely for portable use, unless money was an issue, and then a Dell laptop. (Hey, I have had a couple of them, and used several others, and never once had a problem.) For a desktop I'd go with either a Dell with "all the bells and whistles" or build my own.

Build your own. It's easy, cheaper, and you can choose the components you want.

I'd wait for Apple to ship Intel Macs and then be one of those people ( ) who say that those will be PCs.

I'd build my own desktop. As far as a notebook, I'd spend my money on nothing else but a Thinkpad.

My fastest PC is one I built and used for running MythTV, until I realized that MythTV sucks (or it did at the time). Now it runs XP Pro and Sage TV. The case is a Cooler Master that looks just like a piece of stereo equipment.

So I build my own PCs mostly, unless I come across something for free/cheap. My server is a Dell PowerEdge 4400.

That's about as witty as that stupid pirate picture is after being used so much.

There is a 21 year precedent for 'PC' referring to non-Apple hardware and 'Mac' referring to Apple hardware.

Back in the day, when I couldn't afford a Powerbook; maybe 1992?
Toshiba Satellite running DOS 3.1/Imb RAM treated me right. Would look to a Satellite and compare w/Sony Viao, Levono.

Don't buy desktops.

Build my own in a Shuttle case. I’m not up to date with the current Intel/AMD architectures, so would need to do some research. Probably not the newest and latest. Somthing modest keeping in mind I’d like 0.5–1 GB of RAM and a decent video card (not newest and latest either).

Notebook: Likely ThinkPad. Centrino or whatever has replaced it. Won’t exclude Dell. Sony possible, but cautiously.

If I were to get a PC I think I'd use ArsTechnica's System Guide and do the Budget Box.

In fact, just looking through the guide I'm really tempted to do it, but I don't have $800 to spare for something unessential like that.

I can't think of ONE desktop PC that I would buy. I did, however, buy a Dell Inspiron 8600 last year, which now belongs to the wife. It's actually a great laptop and I had Ubuntu on it. So if I couldn't get a Mac, which is a moot point now since I own a new G5 iMac, it would be a laptop. Windows would get erased immediately and Ubuntu Hoary would go on it.

Another good reason for the 486, it'd be cheap used, and wouldnt' take money out of my pocket to spend on a PM

I built my own G5. I put the dual 2Ghz together with the little antenna thingy out of the back and a 20" Cinema display. I also had FUN opening the case to add more RAM and just for old time's sake I left the panel off for additional cooling. *teasing; this is not suggested for the G5!!!

Not much info really, I know Philips sells these 'Philips Freeline' PCs in the UK and some other euro markets. I can not find real info in my country Philips site.

Googled and got this brochure

But now that the Intel Macs don't need all the innerspace of the ridiculously large G5, my next PC will likely be a Mac - I'm sure it'll be much more compact, even if not quite a Shuttle.

As others have said, build you own tower. I bought a Sony VAIO about 18 months ago and had issues with the Power Supply Unit being to small for a Graphic Card update and had to drop everything in a new case just to upgrade the PSU for the new Graph Card because Sony's PSUs are not a standard size. After having done the mod I couldn't believe I'd ever bought over the counter because it's really not that difficult and I really enjoyed doing it. Build your own!

The Sony Vaio FS series notebooks have a very cool design:

I actually may buy a bunch of PC's sometime in the future...

A bunch of servers. Probably IBM. For rendering. Like 5 of them would do. But neither 3D app I use supports network rendering AFAIK. And I don't have the money. But it would be nice.

When I had to have a WinXP system I built my own. I certainly would never go near Alienware unless I had lots of money to burn, and if I had lots of money to burn I'd burn it on a 2.7 GHz dual G5. The _only_ advantage wintels have is price. My 2.83 GHz Pentium 4 box cost less then my eMac. I prefer the eMac except when I have to run certain Windows-only software which simply goes to slowly on the eMac under VPC. Which is why I got the WinXP machine.
