I think the "No threads about other members" should be amended to also forbid sidetracking threads into a discussion of other members. It seems like a lot of threads these days basically devolve into two or three members psychoanalyzing each other to death. I think that's the kind of thing the rule was supposed to prevent, but people are kind of getting around it.

Just thought I'd make the suggestion.

(Discussion of why I'm a whiny little baby and/or Stalinist for wanting this in 5, 4, 3…)

In olden times, the "I am tired of hearing about hatefulness, belittling, meanness, etc." would have gotten locked pretty quickly. Don't know whether to chalk it up to the mods being lazy or giving us more leeway. Oddly, though, in the olden days that thread would have been 5 pages overnight, so maybe they know something.

[psychoanalyzing] So, I think what you're trying to say, because you obviously don't get enough love from outside the 'NN is that there is not enough respect being doled out to you and that you are trying to compensate by creating thread about someone else but not really about just one someone else, but multiple someone else's? Or did your mom not hug you enough and didn't breastfeed you. [/psychoanalyzing]

I kid.

Seriously; "sidetracking" is essentially derailing and is already against the rules.

If you were referring to me, I haven't psycho-analyzed anyone. I have spoken in a thread about hateful people making posts what psychologists have said about people who attack others. But that's something different all together. If you weren't talking about me then nevermind.

Anyhow, I would be ALL FOR there being a rule against derailing threads by attacking and singling out members of said thread/s if such rule didn't already exist.

I guess maybe it needs to be practiced more?

Dakar, why do you keep resigning as new Darkars? Do you think the "Clinically Insane" badge will make you feel like you have no life?

Are you "sidetracking" this thread to talk about other members?

A pill is not to be confused with a pillow, which is something else entirely.

I like pillows.

Railroader is right-sidetracking and derailing are the same thing. Not all of us on staff get to check out every single thread, and sometimes we miss gems that should have a rule or two applied. Other times, we don't read the whole thing (guilty here) and participate without knowing that earlier in the thread (say two pages earlier) there was a huge derail where User X started talking about how skanky User Y was in some other thread...

If it's a real derail instead of just an aside, report it and we'll look at it. With our current staffing levels, we are hard pressed to wrangle all the spam. (Note the subtle reference to our current drive to recruit more mods... )

I'm not trying to be a pill. I'm honestly curious to know why someone would keep signing up with the same username plus number and thereby resetting their post count to zero. I mean, it's not done to change his identity. It's not done because he wants a new username. What possible reason can there be?

whenever he reaches 5000 posts, or 4999 if you look at his first nick (dakar), he switches to the next number up. as the post above this one suggests, it's just something that he does. he's not using all the nicks at the same time, he just retires them.

*hmm, looks like he retired the last one two posts short

I take that back. I guess I was wrong. That only applies to OBVIOUS attacks. Those that are passive aggressive ones are ok. Regardless of them obviously being flame-bait from known stalker/flame baiters.

I don't think they said anything about not liking it here, but rather the behavior of others.

The thing is, we don't really know who is a member here. There is a thread about Al Gore, but we don't really *know* that he isn't a member here, just for instance.

Maybe the rule should be "no threads about anybody"?

I think you're on the right track.

Maybe a new rule requiring "no threads about anybody or anything."

We'll just be sitting around all day, writing about nothing. And people would still read it.

Threads about nothing would also provide stiff competition for Fuzzy Wombat though, so I'm not sure how I feel about that...

Then again, Fuzzy Wombat has survived a pretty long time in the midst of the several legendary MacNN forum threads which were essentially about nothing, so I suppose I'd be okay with the migration to nothing.

Are you finally willing to admit your intention of posting the "why?" in the first place was to annoy?

What about admitting you lied when you said you never posted about trying to annoy me at fuzzywombat?
