I was originaly excited about this!

But after seeing the preview on Yahoo..

i cant help but feel a little let down.

What happend to Tim Burton and
Danny Elfmen? They used to be the best at creapy movies with carnival
like freeks. Especialy Dark and mysterious movies (IE the original Batman).

Go see the preview on yahoo.. and let me know what you think.

Charlie and the Chocolate factory was never supposed to be just plain creepy.

It was supposed to be fun and whimsical on the surface, but a little more serious underneath. It's about having fun, but also knowing what responsibility and respect means.

I'm still undecided on this movie. The Gene Wilder version was great. But I haven't seen enough in the trailer to judge - which is a good thing.

Have you SEEN the old movie recently. I couldn't believe I didn't see its ****ed-upedness as a child. The movie scares me now!

I love the original!

I LOVE Johnny Depp! Johnny Depp deserves an Oscar. He deserved one for his pirate movie.

Tim Burton is great and this movie is going to mean an Oscar for Johnny.

Oh, and yes, the original has some dark moments.

The Oompa Loompas are creepy. The girl that turns into a blueberry. The part where Charlie almost rises into the turbine in the bubble tube or silo.

A LOT of dark moments, ESPECIALLY the scene with Wilder in the office where he has the conversation with Charlie and his grandfather and he tells them to get out and go home.

Interesting thread.

Serious and threatening for sure, but I wouldn't call it dark. To me dark describes the mood and the atmosphere, not just whether or not someone is in peril or how serious the scene is. But hey, that's just me.

This looks like another bastardization of a great story by our dear hack director Burton. And as for Depp, the guy his high on his own success, and he's just acting like a neckless goober weirdo in some of his more recent successful movies. Maybe he's found his niche, and that's fine, but leave Willy Wonka out of it.

I posted the trailer in a few other threads already, because it's honestly the most CREEPY thing I've ever seen in my whole entire life. Just for the record I've seen a lot of creepy stuff, but nothing tops the latest hack job by Burton.
Every single thing about Depp in that preview is plain terrifying. His look, his voice, his acting.
If I was a child, I sure the hell wouldn't want to see this movie it would give me nightmares for weeks!

I watched it and thought, "WTF?" The first movie was fairly sucky but this one looks creepy, dark and sad.

Well, Tim Burton tends to do creepy, dark, and sad movies. At least in the original movie, Willy Wonka LOOKED like a man. I have to agree with the other posters and say that this Johnny Depp Willy Wonka looks more like a woman.

And does anyone else find the smile on Depp's face in the one scene in the trailer more than a little demented (and disturbing?) And what the fcuk is up with "Chewing gum I think is gross/Chewing gum I hate the most?" The way it's said is pretty creepy... (and not because I know what happens to the girl who chews the gum, either).

The story itself is meant to be a lesson of sorts to kids that Being Selfish And Greedy Has Consequences.� The original movie seemed to achieve that fairly well (remember that it was aimed at kids). This remake seems to be aimed more at adults who remember seeing the original movie as children, than it is for children themselves.

EDIT: I just looked at the IMDB page for this movie... Christopher Lee as Willy Wonka's Father???

Nowhere in the book did Roald Dahl EVER mention Wonka's father (at least not as an active character anyway...) I could be wrong, of course as it's been at least 20 years since I read the book and it's sequel, "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" (which picks up right where the first book leaves off after the elevator leaves the factory and is just beyond bizarre, BTW).

I just watched both trailers.

From the trailer I get the opinion that Johnny Depp was merely doing his version of "Tim Burton Method Acting" and I was not impressed.

Tim Burton should NOT have remade this film. His take on it is not good.

I have to say that I think that Johnny Depp's considerable talent was wasted.

I also think that the reason Burton released these trailers is to feel out the public and see what people think.

Well, Tim, we're not impressed. An Edward Scissorhands version of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory is NOT what we wanted or anticipated.

It looks like the movie sucks.

Too bad.

the gene wilder version REALLY nailed it. solid. creepy, intense and charming. a moral (or more) thats handed over well.

its not even that old of a movie that it needed to be remade.

this. and im only going by the trailer. that bit of dialogue from depp sounds like freaking dr suess, which wonka never did IIRC.

stylistically, meh. whatever. the sets will probably look cool.

tim burton though. hes like a one trick pony. oh look, another tim burton movie. chiche'd goth crap to the gills. im not looking forward to this.

I'm really torn on this. I love Depp and Burton, and I think it will be good. I'll go see this even if the trailer sucks. Trailers don't tell the whole story.

But I don't see how anyone can ever do better than the original. I can see someone coming close, but that would take a miracle. Gene Wilder was absolutely brilliant in that movie. Bitter, sarcastic, mad scientist insane, whimsical, and so much more all at the same time. It's still one of the most dynamic performances I've ever seen. The rest of the actors were great too. The sets were awesome. It was the whole feel of the movie. It captured the book perfectly. They just nailed it.

I wonder if the way they put that preview together is what makes it looks like it is going to be horible. It was very disapointing to me. I will probably wait for it to come out on base so I don't have to pay for it at all.

Hmmm, not sure if it'll be as bad as everyone's making out.

Sure, no-one'll ever be able to 'do' a Wilder and pull off one of the most enigmatic and charismatic portrayals ever, but that's not to say the original was perfect.

I agree that Depp looks strangely gaunt, and the bowl cut looks like it's been stolen off some German S&M mistress (think Cabaret?) and the overall look of the film seems like it was actually designed for Marilyn Manson circa '94-'95 with Depp doing his best to make the screenplay look like he's not doing a Manson impression. (and found wanting)

But, it should be a laugh and a shock.

6 months or so away, so you never know what the edit'll do to it.

As it appears, I'm more keen to spend a fiver to see this than most other new films due out. I'm just hoping that Burton stops being such a wimp, and doesn't keep going all Oliver Stone (aka Mister style over content) - i.e. Making films that promise darkness and gothique, but turn out as just trite 50's kiddy stories with slightly psychedelic sets. It's like The Rasmus and HIM, you wanna be a goth, be a bloody goth - if you wanna sing Enrique Englesias songs - don't dress it up like The Mission!

I saw this teaser, and it's just that folks a TEASER.
I've read various things stating how dark this film actually is.
If you watch the original, it is VERY dark in spots...almost to the point where it is scary and hardly concidered a children's movie.

THe screen writer for this flick, did so w/ Burton, and apparently he never saw the original, and wrote it all from the book.

I like Burton, I like Depp, and I think Elfman is great. But what to think of this? Wilder's performance in the original was brilliant, can Depp even come close? I think the only reason I am resistant to this movie is because of the original. To be honest, it looks kinda creepy and cool in a 60/70's pyschedelic androgynous sorta way.

Think I'll wait 'til dvd.

With his recent switch to serious roles, Robin Williams coulda been the perfect Willy Wonka. Another problem with Depp is that for those who know how the end of the story goes, Wonka should be a slightly older character, not so young looking like Depp.

The thing about teasers is that they should try not to tease you into thinking the film is going to be crappy.

FYI, Depp looks like Anna Wintour and the pedigree of the filmmakers and the best intentions in the world can't stop anyone from making a narrow-minded adaptation.

The only problem I see with the teaser is I don't see Depp as Willy Wonka.

I think the only thing that I will notice is in the original, the strange behavior was pretty subtle (Except for the tunnel) but I think it will be much more obvious with Johnny Depps version.

That's weird... I kept thinking how old he looked throughout the trailer. How old was he in the book? How old was Wilder in that first movie? (How can anyone possibly say the first movie was good by the way?)

I either see it being VERY good or VERY bad. It's going to be hard to live up to the original. Wilder played Wanka perfectly in my opinion. It felt like he wasn't even acting...
