I'm wondering when we'll see a new version of the standard iPod.

I'm hoping that it'll be soon; I'm in the market, as it were, and I'd like to buy an old one from the red tag section of the apple store.

So does anyone know when this'll happen?

I think we already have the new version of the standard iPod:

My guess is that Apple is phasing out the older iPods and is just going to replace them with the Photo models. Maybe I'm wrong.. What does everyone else think?

Yep, I agree. The iPod photo will become the 'regular' iPod.

the ipod photo is the new ipod, that is why it is priced at $350 for 10gb more storage. you get a color screen and 50% more storage space for only $50 more. the 30gb ipod phote is a good deal.

I think they'll keep the monochrome 20gig models around just as a space filler for a while, but the Photo's are definitely taking over. I think they'll be more likely to fully phase out the 20g when there's a 30+gb hard drive small enough to match the 20 in size. I dunno about everyone else out there, but I'm pretty weight/size conscious. My 20's about as big as I'm willing to go, I'm going to be picking up a 6gig mini soon for out and about and just keep my 20 in my car and house. Though if I was to purchase a new ipod at this point I'd make it the photo over a 20.

I am gonna pick up a 30gb photo for the car and school and an 512mb ipod shuffle for more portability. I would hate to ruin a $350 ipod photo.

^ Why not get an old 40GB photo from the Sale section w/ the AV cable & dock for cheap? WAY better deal than the new 30GB.

What if you want the lightest, larger capacity iPod that you can get with a color screen?

That's why I'm going with the 30GB over the older 40GB. I'm paying for a slightly lighter unit. I can get the other cables and stuff elsewhere.

^ That's insanely dumb. The size is so negligent when you get that large...sure, a mini or shuffle, you'd notice a difference, but on an iPod that large you wouldn't have time to notice. Go on, waste your cash

The color screen will likely become standard on the plain-old iPods. Maybe apple finally got a deal on color displays?

The mini if for those who need capacity, but small.
The shuffle is for those who need cheap and tiny.
The photo is for everyone else (whether you need photos or not).

The iPod Photo is a crappy product.

They really screwed up by discontinuing the 40GB iPod.

Seems like marketing is going in that direction as well. the new packaging of the ipod photo can be seen on ipodlounge and the word photo has been de-emphasized to some small mentioning on the bottom of the box. so it looks like this really is the new "standard" ipod.

I wouldn't be surprised if after awhile Apple drops iPod "photo" from this iPod's name altogether, and simply calls it "iPod" All signs seem to point that Apple is heading in this direction.
