Valve is recommending all Steam users to upgrade ASAP, so I guess they added more graphics stuff. I don't dare hope that it's a new GLSL, do I?
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

I'm just hoping they fix the Time Machine bug in Server, causing the server and/or client to crash.

If it ain't broke ...

I've been burned a few too many times by MacOS updates that weren't properly QA'd for the device I was installing it onto. In my experience, Apple doesn't always pay much QA attention to devices that are over 2 years(ish) old. As such, I usually wait until an update contains something I need, and even then I wait to see if there are any user complaints from people running the same machine as me.

That kind of attitude has led to many Windows machines getting overrun with worms and spyware.

And, this is why I wait.

I'm not saying that updates aren't necessary, just that I don't understand the mad rush to get the update as though it's the newest released iPhone.

Those "plugins" are, most likely, hacks, which are pretty much guaranteed to be broken by any update.

I think Apple needs to come up with a security scanner like Nessus or something that downloads new data from Apple's servers and runs periodically. This way, it can alert you of possible security problems that affect you, make you aware of stuff that is running that you may not be aware of or want to be running, etc.

Often times those security fixes and under-the-hood enhancements are completely irrelevant to most users, but if there was something saying "this affects you, go download the update NOW" maybe this would inspire people to not get behind in their updates.

I've also come across these hacks that cause crashes.

If you want Growl support you can get it by installing Postbox 2.x, it's a better client anyway IMHO.

I've never had Growl been broken by any 10.6.x update so far. Note it doesn't cause any crashes, GrowlMail simply says that it can't run.

As you would expect, since Growl is a framework that developers can opt to use — i.e. not a hack.

On the other hand, GrowlMail, which is a hack to force Mail to support Growl, lists "Now compatible with Mail in Mac OS X 10.6.4" in its latest changes. This suggests that 10.6.4 broke it too, which isn't surprising. They've probably had to put out a new version for every 10.6.x update.

This is the one thing I hate about apple. The 10.6.5 update was in beta an extended amount of time, its vary large, but there's little details to what is being changed. Apple seems to always use the enhanced stability line. I hate to use a buzz word but apple needs to be more transparent in its change history.

What, because it broke Growlmail? AFAIK, Growlmail is a hack, it doesn't use a published API or anything like that. If it doesn't break in every update, something is wrong.

I don't understand where it comes from, this sense of entitlement that every last screwed up hack should work flawlessly with every single update. If you start implicitly supporting things like that, it soon becomes an accepted way of doing business, and pretty soon you end up in the backwards compability hell that is the Win32 API - or Classic Mac OS, for that matter. Apple got dangerously close with the InputManager situation.

Transparency comes in the form of betas for developers. That has to be good enough, and if it isn't for someone, I suggest that developer switch to Ubuntu.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

I disagree, as well.

I don't need a list of four hundred buffer adjustments or subroutine optimizations.

I'm not a developer, but I would like apple to be more forthright in its communicating what was updated, especially when it comes to any updates to security. This is where Microsoft is better and even Ubuntu.

As a user we don't need to know what subroutine were updated, but I think we should know the depth and breadth of updates.

Agreed. I don't run those hacks because they're a pain, but it'd still be nice to know what 10.6.5 really does fix, in detail.

You realise that developers DO have access to way more than Apple tells consumers about, right? There are hundreds of pages of new documentation that comes out with every 10.6.x release.

I'm not blaming Apple for breaking compatibility, I'm more on a rant against Mail and its awful notifications. GrowlMail will be updated soon enough. The three plugins that I use with Mail all unlock features that a standard install of Outlook has.

Yes...but it was 95% (22/23) implemented in 10.6.3 - or maybe 10.6.2 with one of the graphics updates. We're still missing GLSL 1.3. I haven't installed it myself yet, so maybe some more functions showed up. GLSL 1.3 is the big missing piece - once they complete that, OpenGL 3.1 with GLSL1.4 looks easier. If we get to OpenGL 3.1, we're at least at 2009 levels of the spec. OpenGL 2.1 was released in 2006...

Are any MacBook Pro users getting really good battery life now? The most I could ever eek out of my first-gen unibody was about 4 hours, right now I'm at 3 hours of battery with 2 hours (at least) left, and I have quite a few apps open.
