Sad. I didn't know that it was that close, though of course he hasn't been writing much recently.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

This makes me so very sad. I want to know what happens next to so many of these characters.

Perhaps what is making me the saddest is knowing that someday my son, who loves his books, will read the last one.

oh that's sad. I didn't realise it was so close.
His clever insightful and above all very very human way of writing will be missed.

I heard he offed himself in the foreshadow of things to come. Alzheimer's doesn't kill, it makes you a vegetable.
If true, I'd do the same. It's a horrible disease. RIP now.

He was a proponent of allowing "death with dignity" (ie assisted suicide), but publishers claim that he did not, in fact, do the deed.

His daughter Rhianna, probably best known for writing the script for various computer games, including the Tomb Raider reboot, will be his literary executor.

I met him once. He seemed a bit grumpy but I had just caught him at the very end of a book signing while he was packing up to leave. He still obliged me by signing a book for me before I even paid for it.

I too would choose to beat Alzheimers to the punch. In a heartbeat.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I have never read any of his books, but his audiobooks have been putting me to sleep for years

Sad. I love his books for their insight, wit and humanity.

The early books are fun and funny as anything but the later ones are far more ambitious in their scope. The Lipwig ones particularly on their examination of how our real world institutions really work.

I don't know a single university academic that doesn't feel like they work at UU
