I suppose thats a good thing, because it'll make online music more compatible. I think that there should be just one format to begin with. (AAC of course)

I can't believe RIAA execs are going on record applauding a clearly illegal action. One of two things is happening:
1.) news.com.com is less trustworthy than the NY Times.
2.) RealNetworks is done for.

Am I the only one who sees Apple releasing an iPod firmware update disabling support for RealNetworks' pseudo-FairPlay DRM?

RealNetworks has nothing to worry about if the same Apple Legal Team that defended Apple's use of Rendezvous pursues this case.

Why doesn't Real just use mp3? Perfectly compatible with most players out there.

It could be legally done, if you did it just right.. it wouldn't be perfect though.
One way would be to do it linux style, add a bootloader to the ipod and make a seperate OS to play real files It'd SURE be sellable 
IT COULD be that apple also just let them do it anyway, I mean after all apple doesn't really make anything off the music store, but off the ipods. If someone else wants to make the tiny profit go ahead.

Because somehow I doubt that they or any of the music labels are interested in making it easy for people to make the music they purchase freely available over the Internet to millions of people.

So wait, I'm confused. Real is selling protected AAC files that are compatable with the iPod? Or is it some new format that is compatable? How would that even work?

I don't think I could support the actions of Apple or RealNetworks. It's as bad as the RIAA, with all the pushing and shoving for stronger media ownership. i repeat this, I think their should be only ONE format for online music. We don't worry about these things when we want to play a DVD or a cd. Wouldn't it suck if every movie we saw had it's own format that could only be watched on it's own DVD player. sold exclusively by a certain company? That is simply bullsh*t! I respect Apple, but DRM has got to go!!! Thank God for the hackers that came up with Fairplay! This is pissing me off!!!   
Edit: And by the way, I have never bought music online.
