Is anyone running a G5 with virtual pc? We are getting ready to make a media machine purchase for a rather large company, it will be used for intensive graphics and film editing. I was told that you could run virtual pc on a mac wich would be really really great if I knew how well it worked? I have heard rumors of hardware issues causing flaky behavior. We will be running adobe premier on win xp in the virtual machine. I would be grateful for any advice anyone has.

I haven't used a recent version of VPC but I hear it is much faster than the older ones. That being said Adobe Premier is not an app that you want to emulate. If they are stuck on using premier you would probably be better off with a PC. I'll let the people with recent experience correct me though as I am really unsure.

Virtual PC is for occasional use of lightweight applications. Video editing is just about the last thing you'd want to do in emulation.

Why not run Final Cut on the Mac?

If Premiere is a requirement, then get a PC.

Why would you order expensive G5s when the apps they are using are all PC based? VPC is unusable for anything heavy like that, and even a high end pc will cost less then the G5s you are probably ordering.

I use Virtual PC on my 2.7GHz PowerMac with 3GB of RAM. I run Quicken and to Lotus Notes on XP inside Virtual PC. It's quite snappy and actually feels more responsive than connecting to a real XP box using Remote Desktop Client. I'm totally satisfied with the solution.

It would be ridiculously slow for gaming or video editing, though. I'm with the other folks, just buy a PC if you need to run Premiere.

Isn't there a Notes Client for OS X? I thought IBM made one after many managers complained … ??

I have to concur with some of the comments. I have a Dual 2.0 G5 and virtual pc. I use it to check website layouts via Internet Explorer on a PC, and occasional Microsoft Access stuff. It takes a bit to load and is slow for most any tasks that require any bit of processor usage.

Only recommend for very light work.

Why don't you use FinalCut Pro or Avid instead? Avid runs on both platforms …

Why anyone would choose Premiere over FCP, or even Final Cut Express, I just don't know. But, I agree. If you must, stick with a PC. At least until we're dual booting WinVista and OS X on mactel boxes

I've used premiere for video editing and I have to admit it is a pretty
horrible package. If your firm you work in is invested in it there's little
you can do.

But if you have the opportunity to make a change to FCP or one of
Avids' offerings do so. Once you've used these more capable apps
you won't go back (at least in most cases).
