Anyways, these are pretty minor changes, and it seems you're damned if you do and if you're damned if you don't, when assessing fakeness.

On the one hand people complain it's too different from Tiger, so it must be fake. On the other hand people complain that it's not different enough from Tiger, so it must be fake.

I think the more pertinent discussion is not almost meaningless differences (in the greater scheme of things) like button grouping or dock height, but differences in significant OS functionality like virtual desktops and virtualization, etc.

You can group buttons in Tiger. You just need to use a NSSegmentedControl. Here is an example of grouped buttons radio style.

No man, the iTunes style interface is so 90s. It looks like OSX's interface has gone full circle, back to platinum. Squared off edges, boring grey colour, little tabs, etc.

I always thought Aqua was kinda a gimmick. I'd rather have something more professional looking that doesn't get in the way (pinstripes anyone?)

OK, so now I just need to go to the Finder's Customize Toolbar sheet and drag out an NSSegmentedControl…

Which still doesn't address erik's comment about it making very little sense to group the action button with the path button.

How many people honestly believe Apple would put the Windows version in the About box?

Come on? Apple makes computers that run MacOS, not Windows boxes. The vast majority of Mac users don't care about running Windows either. Geeks and some people using their Macs in corporate environments care, but that's not very many. This whole running Windows on your Mac is a niche function that is getting a lot of hype.

It is not so important to the average Mac user that Apple would put it on the About box. Besides, they'd have to display trademark and copyright information if they did.

This is obviously fake.

Appleinsider had some interesting things to say about the screenshots (which are now known as fake):

"Another rumored feature of Leopard -- one which appears to be shown in the unauthenticated Leopard screenshots -- is the unification of Apple's Address Book and iCal applications into a single app. Interestingly, the two screenshots making the rounds on the Web this week indeed show a revised Address Book icon that also displays a date. This is coupled with the absence of the traditional iCal icon in the Mac OS X Dock."

They also had this to say (which is cool):
"Still, the juiciest rumors surround Apple's Boot Camp and where the company may or may not take the technology. Although sources did not explicitly say that Boot Camp would be transformed into a complete virtualization solution, they did say the technology is being groomed as a rival to Microsoft's Virtual PC Express."

http://appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1837

I think the Finder look was pretty accurate, it's pretty obvious that is where Apple is going with all their apps.

Again, put that ass next to vista and expect it to last the next 3 years.

AppleInsider believe anything and make up everything. Whatever happened to their multicolored MacBooks with X300 graphics they said their 'Insider' told them about Badly wanted to see the red model they claimed was coming.

Yeah, the biggest problem in those screengrabs was the Windows in About box thing (and "CoreWindows").

However, I do think:

1) 10.5 may get virtualization (but maybe people who said it won't get virtual desktops are right).
2) 10.5 will look quite similar to 10.4 in most things.
3) The Finder will get another minor update (although I hope it will get a big one that fixes everything and makes coffee in the morning).

ISTR a few remarkably good hardware predictions on Eug's part. Eug, didn't you call the original G5 iMac pretty damned accurately when a lot of folks were expecting G4s? Don't remember anything about software from you either way. At any rate, I'm with you on the prospect of Leopard looking like Tiger "in most things." Apple's had a good aesthetic for OS X for a while now, especially since they toned down the pinstripes, and they don't have to go making drastic appearance changes to get folks to upgrade, like Microsoft thinks they need to.

Not to say that it'll look exactly the same, since there'll probably be some cool changes, but I think they'll be too subtle for most non-Macheads to notice right away.

I doubt 10.5 will look similar to 10.4. The move of iLife away from Brushed to Plastic, along with the rest of Apple's apps, signals that Apple is probably ready to move OS X to the Plastic interface.

IMO Aqua (including plastic) must go.

Plastic would have been cool 7 years ago when Aqua was first shown off. But these days it just looks dull.

It's odd how conservative Mac users are in their tastes. "Just make everything look like iTunes and I'll be happy".

10.5 is the last big update we're gonna get for 3 years or so. Do you guys realize how incredibly boring Aqua will look in 2010?

Um, how do you know that?

I don't think Apple has said that 10.6 (or whatever they call it) won't be released in 1.5-2 years?

UIs should look boring. They are supposed to help you do your work in the least intrusive way possible. I love the look of plastic and the pro apps. Save your eye candy for games and entertainment, but stay out of the way otherwise.

****ing Vista and it's translucent window bars would drive me nuts.

One of the reasons I hate XP with their Fisher Price inspired UI. Even the dark blue Win95-2000 title bars are awful. Looks like Vista is going to be even worse.

Anywho, Apple can come up with something much smarter than just adding tabs to the finder and calling it a new version.

My favorite GUIs look more like proprietory systems. They are

Softimage 2.5-3.5 for NT 3.51
3D Studio 4 for DOS 6
Discreet Flame and other Discreet/Autodesk apps
Apple's current Final Cut Studio apps

Vista Vs. Tiger:

Vista pretty much wins. This is the exact reason I think 10.5 will be a BIG change.

Funny, I came across an article (at PC Magazine, I believe?) a week or so ago that gave Tiger a decided edge, only giving Vista's sidebar a better grade than the Apple-equivalent feature.

Well point is they are REALLY close now. That is why 10.5 needs to come out and make vista look 10 years old the day it ships.

I love the compaints, but I don't know what those guys are complaining about. Vista edges out OS X Tiger. The newest, greatest, yet-to-be released OS from Microsoft is barely better than an OS that's been out for over a year. Gods know Microsoft tried their hardest to copy nearly every feature that made Tiger significant.

This is a hidden complement for OS X.
