I suspect this will be the case whenever folks try to tie the Bible to modern day welfare. Otherwise, I'm not sure the Bible would have come up at all.

It does seem to come up frequently when we discuss welfare, although I don't think it should. Modern day welfare is a component of modern day capitalism, it needs to be examined within the prism of modern day capitalism and all that comes with it. Therefore, biblical arguments are pretty much pointless, again, even if every American was on the exact same religious page.
