Subject: 20th Anniversary Mac

I just wanted to add a comment about the 20th Anniversary Mac. I was actually selling macs retail at the time of it's release and there was a very Apple-esque promotion based around the celebration. You mention that it started at a retail of $10 K. But what this included was that a limo would deliver the Mac to your house, and a man in a Tuxedo would set it up for you. We only had one customer who actually went through with this, but as far as I know, the setup was delivered as described. Not bad for $10 K.

IMHO, it's only value is from a nostalgia standpoint.

I'm guessing, but I would think less than $500, unless you want to keep it for another 20 years... at that point, it might be worth $600

No it really was $10,000. Even if you didn't do the limo bit.

After they didn't sell they quickly dropped the price but it still didn't sell that well so they sold them off for next to nothing to Apple employee's.

I saw one when I was a kid at a Disney tech expo. IMO the design philosophy of the TAM lives on in the present day iMac.

I bought one four or five years ago--to the tune of $1,000. Purchased it from the original owner, with all the boxes, pen sets, etc.

In all reality, it's a great little media center. It has a built in TV tuner, a bad-a$$ Bose sound system, and is upgradable to a G3. Of course, the only caveat (other than a potential "buzzing" sound from the subwoofer/power supply) is it's lack of RAM expandability--it can only handle 128 Mbs.

Other than that, it will look awesome in your office:

I think it's a good deal. In another 20 years or so they'll be antiques and sought after by collectors. I always wanted one

It looks cool. Really cool. But is it really worth it ? It's seriously outdated and is only good for playing CDs... You could invest your $500 in a small office hifi.

I wouldn't buy one. But IMHO the TAM is one of the few (and will definitely be the 'newest') computers that have the possibility of ending up as a true antique in the far future. They where only manufactured in a (relatively) small quantities and sold in even fewer. They are made of high quality materials, are extremely stylish and unique looking.
