Why has Apple purposefully left out Finder functionality and therefore file storage and retrieval/useage in the iPhone OS?

I don't know about the Touch but all other iPods allow for file storage use - why not the iPhone?

And how do you get around this? Yes, you can access iDisk through the internet however this is not going to work when there is no connection.

This then leads onto where is Terminal, a process monitor, log viewing etc etc aka unix/OS X

There's supposed to be some app from App.store that allows it to be used. Lemme see if I can find link but it was on the one of the major sites.

Pop over to the App Store and buy a copy of FileMagnet for five bucks. It solves that problem. Also, .doc and pdf files are actually viewable.

Can't on the Touch either (without 2.0 and 3rd-party app).
I am stupidest when I try to be funny.

I found the answer why Apple didn't include this functionality after reading the whining comments from the PC - too hard for the different file systems (I guess)

Huh? Apple understands quite well how to read the filesystem on the iPhone.

I am sure Apple does know all about the iPhone file system - I'm sorry if you inferred this from my post.

Have you ever tried to share files with a PC using an iPod formatted for Mac? Windows can't see the drive and wants to format it. File use usually requires MacDrive loaded on the PC and (until recently) almost impossible with Vista.
