The Apple store is not open yet, but I just got this email from ExperCom:

This morning Apple announced new iBook G4 models! Now with faster processors up to 1.33GHz and AirPort Extreme standard, these models pack even more punch. Even better, the price has been lowered! The high end model now has the SuperDrive standard, and all 14" models have a 60GB hard drive. The stock configurations are:

$999 iBook G4 12" 1.2GHz 256MB/30G/Combo/AirPort Extreme
$1299 iBook G4 14" 1.33GHz 256MB/60G/Combo/AirPort Extreme
$1499 iBook G4 14" 1.33GHz 256MB/60G/SuperDrive/AirPort Extreme

We have found that most of our customers get at least an extra 512MB of RAM, so we are starting off with some great RAM bundles on these iBooks, each with a total of 768MB of RAM at great prices. Now you can run Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and iLife how it is designed to run. And remember, they ship for 1! Stock is expected soon:

$1059 iBook G4 12" 1.2GHz 768MB/30G/Combo/AirPort Extreme
$1359 iBook G4 14" 1.33GHz 768MB/60G/Combo/AirPort Extreme
$1559 iBook G4 14" 1.33GHz 768MB/60G/SuperDrive/AirPort Extreme
http://www.expercom.com/view_product..._ID=27&AD=MAIL

We also offer great AppleCare bundles on these new iBook models:

$1059 iBook G4 12" 1.2GHz 256MB/30G/Combo/AirPort Extreme w/ AppleCare
$1359 iBook G4 14" 1.33GHz 256MB/60G/Combo/AirPort Extreme w/ AppleCare
$1559 iBook G4 14" 1.33GHz 256MB/60G/SuperDrive/AirPort Extreme w/ AppleCare
http://www.expercom.com/view_product..._ID=27&AD=MAIL

With the new models, the previous models are on closeout. We think the 14" models represent a fantastic value. Give us a call and we will put together a custom bundle price for you on any of these just discontinued iBooks with extra RAM or AppleCare. The stock prices are:

$949 iBook G4 12" 1GHz 256MB/30G/Combo
$1099 iBook G4 14" 1GHz 256MB/40G/Combo
$1249 iBook G4 14" 1.2GHz 256MB/60G/Combo/AirPort Extreme
http://www.expercom.com/view_product..._ID=27&AD=MAIL

Apple also announced a new model to the Power Mac G5 lineup. Filling a gap in the low end, they have resurrected a single processor 1.8GHz Power Mac G5. If you don't run in dual-processor aware applications all day, this is a great model, as it saves you $500 over the same computer with dual processors. We are throwing in 512MB of extra RAM for a total of 768MB, or you can choose a great AppleCare bundle price. Stock is expected soon:

$1499 Power Mac G5 1.8GHz 256/80G/SuperDrive w/ extra 512MB FREE
$1599 Power Mac G5 1.8GHz 256/80G/SuperDrive w/ AppleCare

interesting - the new base tower (with 160Gb HD, 1Gb Ram & 20" screen) is almost $2000AUD more expensive than the equivalent 20" iMac.

thats a lot to pay for the ability to expand your Mac

About that new single 1.8GHz machine:
$1,499.00
Estimated Ship: Same business day
Free Shipping

1.8GHz PowerPC G5
600MHz frontside bus

512K L2 cache
256MB DDR400 SDRAM
Expandable to 4GB SDRAM
80GB Serial ATA
8x SuperDrive
Three PCI Slots
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
64MB DDR video memory
56K internal modem
I wonder if it's really that much cheaper to have the frontside bus at 600MHz instead of 900MHz. And that video card? And the measly 256MB of RAM?

Wow, I'm not that impressed by this news. It's like saying "you can now buy last year's model at a discount." Hard to get excited about last year's model. And those speed bumps - can you really call it a bump? Isn't it more of a little nudge?

Apple wasn't trying to make a huge thing here like with the new iMac or anything. A while ago, Apple decided to make all their powermacs dual proccessors, but now that the infamous G5 chip shortage is (hopefully) coming to an end, they decided to reintroduce the SP 1.8. This is awesome for a lot of people who have been bitching about a "headless" iMac...well here it is. Also, the powermac has ALOT more expandability then an iMac, which is extremely important for some people. So now they've got a pretty stacked line up with all the dual G5's, this "middle" G5, then the low end iMac G5's.

I'm pretty happy about this though, now theres a powermac for the price of an iMac. Pretty sweet deal.

Why, dear God why did they have to go and cripple the bus??? I'm still debating purchasing a lowend tower with my edu discount, but the stupid bus is pissing me off. I'm glad it's got FW 800.

Nope, only to the mid-range 17" iMac.

After US Edu discount, the iMac is $ 1399, the PowerMac $ 1349.

Basically, with the iMac, you get the 17" TFT for $ 50.
Drawback: you can't upgrade the GPU, you have only FW 400 and no PCI.

I'll be going for the iMac.
