I think that is just an Illusion. There is a concept in mountaineering based on "time in the danger zone". Simply put the more time you spend in dangerous places the more likely you are to die. There is also a saying: There are old climbers and their are bold climbers, but there are very few old bold climbers. I personally gave up being bold in the mountains, mostly because I want to get old.

What, like magic? You think he cursed himself by capturing crocodiles?

He WAS able to handle big risks. As for being in dangerous places when he died he wasn't in a dangerous place.

I was not talking about swimming with the stingrays. I certainly understand at least the perceived risk is less that his methods for feeding crocks. But then I am certainly not an expert or even familiar with stingrays in that part of the world.

If by "handle" do you mean he was able to minimize the risks then I would agree with you. But he was certainly not able to eliminate them. He looked danger in the mouth so to speak, and that is how he liked it. I can respect him for that even if I disagree with it.

No I think he got to close to a stingray. Unfortunately the hindsight is 20/20 on the matter! Do you disagree?

You can't really eliminate danger in anything. There is danger in any sport or job. Some more than others.

"If ever he was going to go, we always said it was going to be the ocean," Stainton said. "On land he was agile, quick-thinking, quick-moving and the ocean puts another element there that you have no control over."- USA Today

"Experts have said the stingray may have felt trapped between the cameraman and the TV star. Irwin, the popular host of "Crocodile Hunter," rose to fame by getting dangerously close to crocodiles, snakes and other beasts.

But Queensland Police Superintendent Michael Keating said there was no evidence Irwin threatened or intimidated the stingray, a normally placid species that only deploys its poisonous tail spines as a defense."- USA Today

Yeah, much like people who go out on the road where somebody is driving drunk. I don't blame people for putting themselves in unforeseeable danger.

So I guess you are right then since Steve Irwin was not known for pushing the limits with animals that are considered dangerous. Give me a break.

Do you really think he was able to reduce his risks to the point of driving a car? Boy you are delusional.

Yeah it's not like a stingray or other wild creatures are dangerous or anything if you get to close to them

As every article on this subject has pointed out, no, nobody perceived any danger until he was already dead.

Look it is really simple. I think he got to close. He did it all the time. He even got into some legal trouble recently in Antarctica about it.

Yea, he "accidently" fell into the water, then "accidently" swam near a stingray...what was that they were doing?

Oh I remember filming Steve swimming with the stingrays.

Why not read this then

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=127458

Here is an excerpt:

Marine documentary maker Ben Cropp, who spoke to one of Mr Irwin's crew, said: "Steve got probably maybe a bit too close to the ray, and with the cameraman in front, the ray must have felt sort of cornered.

I think I posted the wrong link. I will fix it in a minute. The photographer is quoted as saying that Steve probably got to close.

Here is an article I found that I think discusses this point with some sensitivity:

I actually find the idea of posting it on the internet sickening. That is assuming is was some Ahole in the coroners office that releases it. But If his wife and family decide that is how best to honor Steve and his wishes, I am certainly ok with that.

Wow!

I've been away for the afternoon and I come back and this is SUCH entertaining reading that I just have to sit here and read it while eating my Orville Redenbacher's Steve Irwin Special Edition Stingray Popcorn - it comes with CHEESE - and I'm going to enter the contest on the package where I'll win a copy of the video of Steve Irwin dying underwater...

That's where this thread is at now, right?
