About a month ago my G5 (Dual 2GHz PowerPC) died . It's the late 2004 model - I got it in December of 2004. It's an $800 repair cost to replace the processor unit. Would it be worth repairing, or should I invest the $800 on something new? Also, if I decide not to pay for the repair, is there a market for broken computers like mine where I may be able to get something in return?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

eBay is the only market that I'm aware that you could make a little money selling the G5 components (working or not).

Take it apart, piece by piece, and list each piece on ebay. I sold my Dual G4 system on ebay that way, I made over $1600 from a system that nobody would buy for $1200 obo.

Can you list the components? I might be interested.....

Anyway, ebay is the best bet.
Signature depreciated.

I'll try eBay; thanks!

The components it has are pretty standard.

- Broken Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5
- 1.5GB PC3200 (400MHz) of RAM (512MB are stock, 1GB came from Crucial)
- ATI RADEON 9600 XT with 128MB DDR SDRAM, DVI and ADC ports
- 160GB Serial ATA; 7200 rpm (I haven't decided if I'll sell this, but I'm listing it just in case)
- Three open full-length PCI-X slots: one 133MHz, 64-bit slot and two 100MHz, 64-bit slots
- AirPort Extreme ready (based on 802.11g specification; IEEE 802.11b Wi-Fi certified)
- Bluetooth

Check the full list here. It's the M9455LL/A model.

This might be fantasy, but can you turn off or remove the dead processor and run it as a single processor machine?
Yose.
Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

I don't think that's possible, unfortunately.

I'd be very interested in the ram, if you end up parting it out.

I had a scare with my G5 (almost same specs as yours) a month ago. Thought it was the logic board, but ended up being my ram. I had to test it out a couple of times to determine.

I've seen similar systems for about $1700-$1800 on eBay. The closest one I can find right now has less memory, only a dvd-rw and only a 9600 ATI card.

Check it here: http://cgi.ebay.com/Mac-G5-Dual-2GHz...QQcmdZViewItem

Lets say $1700 for a working system; it'll take $800 to repair mine, so that's $900. How does that sound?
