That's great, but I hope there's a way to use it landscape. My one gripe about the IPod Touch was it didn't support landscape enough.

Looks like Apple hit it out of the park (again) with this thing. Reports indicate LOTS of cheering going on at the event. Hmmm, Should I pay $499 for an iPad that can run all my iPhone Apps, iWorks, movies, music, AND I can read books on it, OR should I buy a Kindle DX for $489. LMAO!!! Amazon is SCREWED.

I don't know how that one would fly, but you're right, I haven't seen it mentioned. Maybe it's assumed. They can't expect everyone to be using Bluetooth headphones, right?

Nut surprised much, except on the price. Would have liked to see something different and new in a whole new way, but this is good stuff, and what was expected. Can't say I'll be picking one up too soon, though I'd very much like to.

Testing conducted by Apple in January 2010 using preproduction iPad units and software. Testing consisted of full battery discharge while performing each of the following tasks: video playback, audio playback, and Internet browsing using Wi-Fi. Video content was a repeated 2-hour 23-minute movie purchased from the iTunes Store. Audio content was a playlist of 358 unique songs, consisting of a combination of songs imported from CDs using iTunes (128-Kbps AAC encoding) and songs purchased from the iTunes Store (256-Kbps AAC encoding). Internet over Wi-Fi tests were conducted using a closed network and dedicated web and mail servers, browsing snapshot versions of 20 popular web pages, and receiving mail once an hour. All settings were default except: Wi-Fi was associated with a network; the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks and Auto-Brightness were turned off. Battery life depends on device settings, usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific iPad units; actual results may vary.

At it's core this is just an iPod Touch with a big screen. There really is nothing fundamentally revolutionary here.
This thing will be a big hit, but it's not really doing anything new...
If I was an eBook or Netbook maker right now though, I would be getting my resume ready...

Two queries from me:
1. Can you make a phone call with it?
2. A cable to hook up to a projector was mentioned. Any idea on this? VGA or digital?

They make VOIP apps for the iPod Touch, so I'm sure it wouldn't be a stretch to do that with this, too.

I hope you don't have to take it out of the case to use with the keyboard dock.
No wonder it starts at such a low price. Apple will rake us over the coals with the accessories. (No prices listed yet)

I’m actually a bit disappointed because I hoped for a low-spec MBA in tablet format. What we got instead is a giant iPod touch.

I own an iPhone and a MAcBook. I'm not sure how this device fits into my current computing world.
I already use my iPhone for most of my browsing needs...
I think in the future a Desktop / iPhone / iPad combo would be good... but the Laptop / iPhone / iPad combo has way to much overlap.
Tethering? Why no tethering? I already pay AT&T $30 for a portable data plan. Let me use it on this too, ****ers.

I don't dislike this, but I foresee a new trend in computing - completely controlled systems for people who normally shouldn't be near a computer. For example, my mother would love this because it's not a computer but yet she would be able to do many things desktop users do. She would be less afraid of it.
The rest of us might like the screen for videos, ebooks, faster iPhone apps & gaming... I think the price is right and it will be a huge hit.

US prices look good. In old Europe we are going to get shafted.
I don't have an iPhone, so this looks like a winner for me. SD card reader - why not a SD card slot in the beast?

I'd still probably buy a cheap NetBook since I like a physical keyboard, and I'm assuming this runs the iPhone OS, which means no multitasking, right?

It does. I hope they still have app management in iTunes for it. It really isn't going to be any easier on the iPad. More room to avoid other apps, but much more room to drag along to get to the next page.

Could still be an iPhone 4.0/3.2 thing. They have 60 days to announce it. We got no mention of notification handling either. A small window alert on a 10" screen that stops all activity until you deal with it? No thanks!
I'm also curious if cut/copy/paste will function the same way as on the iPhone OS. In theory it could and should.

For those saying it's just a giant iPod: Wait till more apps come out. It sounds like this device can do things the iPod Touch can't dream about.
And as for multitasking: The iPhone OS is capable of multitasking — the iPhone interface doesn't give you any way to do it. The iPad is clearly running an expanded version of the OS, so multitasking could be turned on.
My prediction is that the iPad will ship without multitasking, but it will be enabled in an update before too long.
