For some reason, my ~/Library/Preferences folder contains thousands of strange files with names like cfx#wd3HXLN and cfx#0CqeJgz. The really strange thing is that as I sit here with the preferences folder open, the number is apparently increasing. Initially it said there were just over 5,000 things inm y Preferences folder. It's now over 6,300. These files contain no data, they're just sitting there not really taking up space. They're all owned by my user and have permissions 600.
Does anyone know what's causing them or how I can stop this?

Is your desktop background picture set to change every 5 minutes (or something similar) ?

No, and seems unlikely.
For the record, after I posted this I deleted all the cfx files (rm cfx#*). There are now 259 in my Preferences folder.

Oh, I should probably also note that the rate at which these files are produces is much higher when I have the folder open in the Finder than when I don't. When I have it open in the Finder probably hundreds per minute show up. But if go to the folder in the terminal (and not the Finder, obviously...) I can't observe them appearing.
Ok, it definitely seems to be related to the Finder. It appears that pretty much any Finder activity creates some of these files, opening a new Finder window, changing directories, or even just giving focus to a Finder window does it.
Very strange.

Are you using Electric Sheep screen saver? If so, that might be the source.

I have a couple of these in my /Library/Preferences folder and none in my user preferences folder.
I don't use Electric Sheep screensaver and never have.
I do have my desktop set to change every 5 minutes.
One was created/modified today.
Both my files have permissions set to owned by root and no access to everyone.
The both have identical contents - they are binary plists containing the following:
<dict>
<key>AdminConnectInfoList</key>
<dict/>
<key>AgentLogLevel</key>
<integer>3</integer>
<key>ServerConnectInfoList</key>
<dict/>
<key>Version</key>
<real>3</real>
</dict>

Enter terminal. Enter the following:
cd /
cd Library/Preferences
sudo rm cfx*
(enter admin password)
rm com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
exit
Reboot the machine, you should be good.
