I usually just can't stand to read these comments because they are quite often so utterly idiotic - it is depressing that we allow certain people to breed. These aforementioned comments are not just filled with grammatical mistakes and misspellings (although there are certainly quite a lot of those), but are often retarded arguments that are all emotion and no rational thought (and often in all caps to boot), statements that are incomprehensible, or just simple minded remarks that state the obvious without seeming to realize this.

Every once in a while I'll sort of accidentally skim read a comment and find something that is so insanely dumb that it transcends the threshold of bad and becomes quite funny, perhaps a parody of itself in a way...

Do you guys have any examples of some really retarded comments that are just so dumb or idiotic in some way that they are amusing?

Well it's dumbocracy at work. No need to look at "selected" comments.

I just looked at metafilter for first time since I heard about it. it's *nothing but* such verbal diarrhea. I guess much of world thrives on it ???

Shouldn't this be an Official Thread?

Or are we just assuming that any thread besson3c starts is Official now?

OK, just been to look at that page posted by OwlBoy and something struck me. Isn't the level of commentary an indicator of age? There can't be anyone over the age of fifteen posting comments to YouTube, surely?

Proally true. But the level of bile such young people produce, and the amount of racism, homophobia and other hate is scary. I thought those were things that would be less common in that age group.

Bad grammar and spelling is one thing, but that other stuff…

You thought young people with so much time on their hands that they're forced to hang out at YouTube comment sections would be more polite than average in a situation of anonymity?

It's the duty of young people to rebel against the previous generation (i.e. their parents), so since society in general seems to be very politically correct then it follows that the young person will rebel by being the exact opposite. Which in this case is racism, gayism* and other such "hate".

Such is the way of the world.

Only scary if you overlook the fact that most of the really worrying comments are disingenuous. Anonymity breeds a "masquerade mentality. " Young people just say dumb, risque, obscene crap because they can get away with it.

I pretty much agree, but the dinosaurs on the forum like to claim otherwise. Makes them feel better, I suppose.

To actually be of some use to the consumer, I think some of these platforms should take a Citizendium-like approach.

Citizendium ... is an English-language wiki-based free encyclopedia project spearheaded by Larry Sanger, who co-founded Wikipedia in 2001. The project aims to improve on the Wikipedia model by providing a "reliable" encyclopedia. It hopes to achieve this by requiring all contributors to use their real names, by strictly moderating the project for unprofessional behavior, by providing what it calls "gentle expert oversight" of everyday contributors, and also through its "approved articles," which have undergone a form of peer-review by credentialed topic experts and are closed to real-time editing.
Though for now much too sluggish an approach to keep abreast with the omniscient Wikipedia, I think this is a idea for customer reviews.

They're nerds. They don't have social skills, and they don't have friends.

As a result, they get passionate about inanimate objects and have no problem attacking people with opinions that differ from theirs.

The perceived anonymity of the Internet makes it worse, but if you've ever been in a GameStop or EB Games, you know that a lot of these people would act like this even if they weren't anonymous.

Ahem. Nerds take pride in grammar and spelling. People who comment on YouTube are not nerds.

I'd think you're doing true nerds injustice.

YouTube kiddies are not nerds, they are morons.

Here is an example of a dumbass CNN comment:

GENERAL WESLEY CLARK IS 100% CORRECT.

MCBUSH POW EXPERIENCE, AS UN FORTUNATE

AS IT WAS, IS BY NO MEANS A QUALIFICATION FOR

THE PRESIDENCY. BCBUSH IS NOT MENTALLY, EMOTIONALLY,

INTELLECTUALLY OR BY TEMPERAMENT QUALIFIED TO

BE PRESIDENT. HE IS JUST A SHADY INCOMPETENT MAN.

Here is another one in response to Obama's patriotism speech on YouTube:

Who the hell does this guy think he is that he can redefine what is true patriotism? Seriously his aragence is so deep! Hey by his definition of patriotism. All his friends fail! None of them support this country. Niether does he! Supporting our country means supporting our troops and supporting our wars! Disagree with it after it's done! Not while they are in the field. That is not patriotism to attack thier efforts! Get bent obama! serriously as an OIF III vet, i will NEVER vote for you!

Okay, this is great! In response to this story:

CNN Political Ticker: All politics, all the time Blog Archive - Polls: Obama up, but race remains close - Blogs from CNN.com

But how predictive are presidential polls four months before the election? Not very.

Those make me so pissed. The iTunes reviews used to be great, but now they are all that. What's worse, is they have to be approved. Who the hell approves those?
