This will most likely be a failed thread, but whatever...

I was going to text message a friend who I haven't spoken to in a while, but I didn't quite know what to talk about, so I decided to just let loose and experiment with some free association.

In case you're not familiar with the concept, read this first:

In free association, psychoanalytic patients are invited to relate whatever comes into their minds during the analytic session, and not to censor their thoughts. This technique is intended to help the patient learn more about what he or she thinks and feels in an atmosphere of non-judgmental curiosity and acceptance.
Here's the result, which I sent my friend (who thankfully, has a taste for the bizarre):

ducks with anguished window sills laughing up Nottingham forest with growth in November's sunshiney who the flakes of snow washed pebbles from my blue eyebrows cancer like billows of smoke ran the marathon without a single drop of coffee lakes James Bond with Parkinsons had the hot dog person's telephone number with soccer goalposts eating all the leftovers from Thanksgiving's last resort casino in Nantucket without even asking his dad's approval until the last syllable of his favorite hymnal until death do us part

Am I doing it wrong?

I thought free association was: I say door, you reply window.

That's one form.

One popular version is to give someone a blank notebook and let them write whatever comes to mind, page after page, Sixth Sense style.

Of course...

George: I should be in a place like this. I envy this woman. You get to wear slippers all day. Friends visit, they pity you. Pity's very underrated. I like it, its good. Then they give you those word association tests.
Jerry: Oh, they're great! There's no wrong answer.
George: *nods* Potato.
Jerry: Tuberculosis.
George: Blanket.
Jerry: Leroy.
George: Grass.
Jerry: Tuberculosis.

I might be weird, but every time I don't know what to say, I just shut up and let it go.

That's usually common practice for me. I don't know why I did this...

I think that free association requires both parties to be informed that a free association is about to take place.

If only one guy does it, then it's weird. Send a flare, shoot a gun into the air, whatever, but let them know.

suddenly a shot rang out and the duck was dead, but I never regretted it. to this day ducks get on my nerves. i was not the shooter but i did shoot the sheriff while bob marley ate spaghetti on my doorstep. i always leave a plate for singers or vacuum tube salesmen who happen to be passing by. living near the beach as i do, kindliness is the mother of human syrup, or as aunt jemima always said, shut up and eat your pancakes bitch. i recall a time when travelers were scarce in these parts and its all we could do to keep the barber shop full. floyd isn't the greatest barber, but he needs the cash and we all need well-groomed strangers. the brides need well-groomed strangers as well because they're bored with their husbands and have forgotten what it's like to dance at the square for the annual xmas pageant with elves and santas and mushroom cakes. i think my association is a little too free, but as i always say its a hop skip and a jump to nonsense but its a long way to tipperary. smoke 'em if you got 'em and keep a tight asshole.

Our band in college was named Free Association.

That's why he's gonna kill us. So we got to beat it. Yeah. Before he let's loose the marmosets on us."

Free Association is a lot like the beginnings of meditation. You're encouraged to let thoughts appear and disappear without judgment.
