I assume that whoever wins the bid, will be the city that has paid the most in bribes to the many crooks and blackmailers at the IOC, a notoriously corrupt organisation, that has been stealing for decades. The members basically travel around from place to place demanding money, gifts and other perks.

The Olympics has basically turned into a politically correct circus, where US athletes are warned to "tone down" any celebratory gestures, because obviously, the USA is so damn better than anybody else, and we wouldn't want to upset any simple people who have massive inferiority complexes, now would we ?

You totally ignored his comment about the IOC being corrupt to begin with but what is wrong about celebrating your heard work and victory?

It's all about putting down the USA in the world, and I'm rather sick and tired of it. I expect all the athletes to celebrate tastefully. Show me an athlete that has not please.

Sorry, I do not believe in "sportsmanship", except on a kids little league team, perhaps.

Modern day sports is a big money business, driven by huge salaries, endorsement deals, illegal drugs etc.

Nobody wants to be #2. The most important thing is to win, to get the gold, to be #1. That's all that counts in the end. I would say that just about any athlete who says otherwise is full of crap.

Those athletes should not be allowed to represent the USA again. I'm speaking to, if you win, you get to celebrate! After all they go through to train, and sacrifice, they should be allowed to celebrate.

I'm sorry, I thought you quoted the pertinent part of the article. No, I did not read the linked article, but thanks for reminding me of what the Olympics are NOT about. I remember this instance and it was shameful. It doesn't however justify how the US athletes have been treated regarding celebrating. During the last Olympics they were seemingly singled out and it made my blood boil.

I'm backing the London 2012 bid... being British and all!

Edit: According to the bookies, Paris and London are the favourites, with Paris having a slight edge at the moment.

Yeah well New York and London were bust publicly for breaking the rules. Both tried to sweeten their bids after close by offering to pay for athletes' flights.

New York's bid is dead in the water with the stadium debacle. The race is between Paris, Madrid and London. Paris has the best bid on paper with a far better transport system, a novel proposal to hold events in the city (including 100m dash through the Tuilleries), but I'd prefer if the Olympics weren't in my back yard!

The Olympics is a shadow of it's former purpose. All of the money involved has cheapened the Games. Even bidding to host has turned into a venue for cheating, so how can we expect athletes not to use steroids, etc?

Who do I think will get it? Paris. They seem to be the golden child in the eyes of the committee.

The whole Olympic process, from organizers to athletes needs to take a serious look inside themselves though. What was once intended to bring down international borders with sportsmanship is now quite different.

But I guess that's nothing new. I just miss it when the athletes were young amateurs who were in it for the idea of testing themselves against the others, rather than a bunch of pros who don't give a rats rear.

Politics has been a part of the games forever, though. Look at 1936. Hitler hosting and attempting to highlight the "superiority" of the Aryan. Jesse Owens winning four gold medals. The US boycott of the 1980 Summer games in Moscow. The Russian boycott of 1984 in LA. The 1980 Miracle on Ice, in which a bunch of kids from the US beat the USSR to advance for the gold. Does anyone remember who they played for the gold? No, they remember the game before, because of politics.

Good luck to anyone who cares, the cities, the athletes, etc. I probably won't watch either way.

I want New York to win, but I think Paris will win.

Moscow held an Olympics relatively recently.
Madrid didn't host an Olympics recently, but a nearby city in the same country -Barcelona- did.
New York is not politically correct right now, plus the US has hosted an Olympics even more recently than Russia or Spain.

This brings the contest down to London versus Paris, and in this situation Paris' climate will probably carry the day.

i think NBC has coverage for the next couple olympics. but i could be wrong.
the only reason i'd like to see it in NY is that maybe they'd show some events LIVE then. i'm sick of the 8 hour delay on top of the time zone delay.

Paris has everything already in place, they just don't need an OG, since they're already up to their ears in tourists/visitors.

I'd say Moscow should get it. It's a different era than last time, and the city could probably use the excuse to give itself a face lift and build some new stuff.

None of the other cities will really benefit and it'll be a huge headache anyway.

Even the act of talking about what city should get the Olympic games 7 years from now turns into a political discussion. Come on people!

I would love a chance to visit ANY of these cities. Being that I love to travel but can't afford it much, all of these cities have characteristics I'd like to see. I know that having a great art museum or having beautiful architecture isn't a factor in getting the Games, but all of these cities offer culture that so many others don't. This is really a good list.

We [i]could[/] turn this into a joke thread. Like listing potential events in each of the host cities...

Paris: The Smoker's Mile, where chain smokers have to continually smoke while running a mile. And in the final heat, they have to do it without stepping in any strategically placed dog poop.

New York: the Turnstile Jump. Instead of hurdles, there are turnstiles. Basic, but interesting.

Any other ideas?

New York has no chance, the IOC wants to have the olympics in Europe for 2012, one of the reasons Vancouver was selected for the 2010. With the 2010 Olympics being in North America already this really limits the chance of another olympics being in North America so soon after.

btw - NYC has never once hosted the Olympics, so it would be about bloody time. Nobody can claim to have a worldwide event, without at least once holding it in NYC.
