You forgot the option for "No - I bought it online from the Apple Store and so did pay sales tax but didn't want engraving anyway."
I didn't want engraving because it kills the resale value, and it's a lot like a tattoo--you'll think it was stupid eventually; it's just a question of whether the iPod will still be functional by then. I can't think of anything I'd want tattooed on me or engraved on my iPod.

In a realm beyond site, the sky shines gold, not blue, there the Triforce's might makes mortal dreams come true.

no cause I'll only have mine for a year tops before I sell it to get a new one. Engraving makes it "worth less"

I intend to use mine till it dies. Having my name on it should make it a bit easier to recover if it is lost (though it may not be enough).

*Personally* I find engraving tacky. And it's a sure fire way to kill any resale value.

Ditto. I've had my 1G until it's almost dead, so yeah. Plus the engraving is free right about now, so I considered it a deal.

I got my 3G 40GB iPod engraved when I broke down and got one from Apple.com while they had free engraving + 10% off all iPods (SuperBowl night 2004). Here's what I got:
-Darren's iPod-
...we go down together...
That bottom line is a quote from my favorite band, Taking Back Sunday, who actually released their new CD today which I'm really enjoying at the moment

You also forgot to add "it was engraved due to a promotion". My iPod is engraved and I doubt it will lower the resale value of it if I ever decide to sell it. My wife bought the New Beetle and I claimed the iPod as mine. So mine has Drivers Wanted on the back next to the VW logo.

Me.
Actually, my wife bought me my iPod, and I don't think she knew they could be engraved (which is fine, 'cause I'd imagine if I one day choose to sell it and upgrade, no one would want to buy an iPod with something sappy written to someone they don't know). I'd rather not have my iPod engraved anyway.
