Well, it looks cool, if a bit fragile. Hope it scratches less than an iPod.

It's hard to get too excited about Apple making a phone, knowing that it will probably be overpriced and full of features I don't want to pay for.
I'm not really a cellphone person, I guess, although I do own one.

I love Verizon, they install there wonderful UI on all their phones, they lock down bluetooth file transfer, I love how they won't let you start your nights at 7 p.m.. What's not to love?

No way in hell. First they would call it iPod something.
Second, that shuffle butting is such a stupid ugly idea.

It looks way too tall and skinny. How could you put that in your pocket and have it not break when you sit down?

I think Apple will release an iPhone.
I don't think that's it.

While that picture/ad looks fairly convincing, I really doubt apple would produce that. It's too long and tall, and is just a rehash of what we've got already. Apple's been working on this thing in one form or another for 2 years, I think they would have done a better job.
Plus, there's no removable battery. (Unless it slides out the bottom, doubtful) Apple may be able to get away with the ipod having a sealed battery, but I think trying that in a cellphone would be idiotic.

I agree, they will release a phone, but it will have a camera on the front not back (hard to ichat without looking at the display). This could be a two step process, firstly, a wifi ichat phone for ichating at home or around any wifi hotspot, then later they make it a full gsm phone to roam also.

Ya well done, but one thing: why would they put the camera on the front like people keep saying they should? Nobody uses videoconferencing in the real world, but everyone takes pictures of crap as if their phone were a camera. Thus the rear lens location makes sense.

You make a really good point. If Apple wanted real video conferencing, they would have to have a network to support it! I'm not sure what would be required... but at least a 3G network I would think... which has very little support here in the States. Not to mention the costs for the consumer of all that data transmission. So it makes much more sense to put a camera on the back of the phone for pictures and video recording (like every other phone has).
However, this seemingly defeats the purpose of "iChat Mobile", making me think that whoever came up with this didn't think it out thoroughly enough. Plus Apple wouldn't call it that anyway.
I think it looks kinda neat, it might not be too far off from the real thing. But I'm pretty convinced it's fake.

I just hope that this isn't going to be it. Probably one of the ugliest mobiles I've ever seen.
The whole "mobile OS X" thing has got me stumped though. Why would one go through all the trouble making such a complex mock-up?

Hope they use a Sony Ericsson operating system.
That way it'll still be fugly - but at least it'll work right.

I imagine Apple would make the iSight or the LCD flippable so that you could either take pictures or video conference, if you wanted to. But either way, I'm inclined to think it's just a good mock up.

I guess it all depends upon:
- how integrated it is with OS X
- how large it is
- what carriers use it
I wouldn't mind seeing a phone that is really integrated with the OS... the way it should be. All my contacts, music, pictures, videos... all seamlessly integrated the way Apple could do it.
I just hate to think how bad it could be.

One thought would be a VOIP type phone using WiFi or BT. I don't think that makes much sense, but it could be interesting.

Meh...
The thing does look fragile; I think a phone would demand a slightly different design than traditional Apple designs. I hope it does well, though.
Personally, I'd rather have a Treo 650 ('cause the 700 uses that Windows Mobile crap) or an SE P910.

The iPhone will either be the 'iPod' of cell phones... revolutionary and wildly successful, or a total flop.
The problem is that the service providers have a total lock on the industry. Since they are the ones buying handsets, they say what technologies go into handsets, and what doesn't. They don't want wi-fi and VOIP since they sell service. They don't want it to be easy to drop a new MP3 from your iTunes into the ringtones folder, since they like charging $3 dollars for that.
For Apple to build a phone how Apple wants it, they'd have to basically go it on their own, 'cause the providers are used to getting their way.
With all of that said, Apple could totally flip the industry on its head by building a phone that everyone wants, that is totally awesome, and which sells like hotcakes -- outside of the service providers. If they can convince people that it's worth walking over to an Apple store and paying $400 for the Apple kick ass phone rather than getting a free razr, it will change the US cell phone industry.
But if Apple doesn't do it right, it'll be overpriced and underfeatured. It'll sell a few and then be gone, ala ROKR, or FLOPR as I like to call it.

Yeah, that thing is a joke.
Who makes a video to not actually use the phone? Why not scroll through the menus?

Yea, it looked like someone screwed around with a TV remote to make it look like an Apple phone. Apple would release a smaller phone than that.

I've got a feeling that if they do make a phone, it'll be aluminum/brushed metal like the old iPod mini, since phones need to be pretty durable.
That would fit with those rumors that Apple is placing orders for multi-colored aluminum cases.

Yep, I used to have one. Too bad it was with the world's worst carrier. Cingular. I told Cingular to shove their account up their asses about 4 months into it.
Now if that iPhone actually does indeed see the light of day, and it is available at Alltel, I'll be all over that like white on rice.

I think Apple is wasting its time developing a phone. Release the mobile iTunes client to any phone company that wants it. There's no money to be made in mobile phones.

I honestly don't think Apple has an interest in anything that is built outside of the company. Look at the Motorola Rockr or whatever it's called: it was a half-assed effort on both sides, and probably reinforced Apple's commitment to vertical integration.
In any case I think a sleek phone combing an iPod with traditional phone features would be a good move by Apple, because with MS readying that Zune crap, the battle for market supremacy is about to heat up.
