Surprised no one has mentioned this here (AFAIK).

Anyone going to get one?

Currently it's not orderable from Powerlogix and it's always a good idea to wait a short amount of time, but I wrote a letter to Powerlogix who responded with a knowledgeable tech who told me that for day-to-day use the G3/800 would be far superior than the G4/500.

He also told me there would not be, ever, a G4/800 upgrade.

When it becomes available and proved stable, I will order it.

I don't think anyone has been able to benchmark the 800 G3 as it has not been shipped. As to game performance, the problem will still be the 8mb STI GPU that shipped with these machines. If you are looking to play 2d games or some older (Quake II vintage) 3d shooter types, you should be ok. Don't expect to be anywhere close to a G3 800 (or 700) iBook.

That being said, the Pismo is still one of the best machines Apple ever produced. With an 800 mhz G3, the machine will accomplish all of the tasks we could ask of a machine of that nature.

If we need heavy graphics or video work, it would be time to upgrade to a new machine.

i know that no one tested it, cause it doesn't ship yet.

but my question was, can i benchmark a g4/500 (e.g: ti-book/i-mac) vs.
g3/800 (e.g.: ibook) vs. pismo g3/400 or 500.

most of time i use my pismo to write in word/excel, safari/mail i-tunes and
dreamweaver.
sometimes i use it for cut some short movies on final cut. maybe for only this app it will good to have an g4, otherwise is a g3/800 enough.
(more than...)

Has anyone heard anything new about this upgrade? I'd love to hear about real world usage.

Thought I'd pass on the info I got back from PowerLogix sales team earlier today:

"We're within a few days of being able to accept and process orders.
I'll email you next week when we're ready to go forward and process these."
I noticed that the price has gone up to $399...
