I'm leaving for Japan on Friday, and I have an external firewire HD that I really don't want to carry onto the airplane. Will it be ok if I pack it (very safely) with the rest of my luggage and have it go under the plane? X-Rays won't bother it, will they?

I've never checked mine in but I have taken 2 of them carry on and never had a problem.

NO WAY should you check a drive in luggage, it is quite liable to get broken.

Luggage is exposed to more X-rays that a carry on. It CAN weaken your drive.
Also as Tooki says, it will likely get broken from rough handling.
Take it carry on, and have it hand inspected if at all possible.

Don't put it in your luggage!!!! Seriously, it would be like deliberately dropping it on the ground and hoping it will work afterwards

Not to mention the fact that electonic items are highly desirable items and frequently stolen. There was a case in the UK last week where some baggage handlers were using the new X ray machines (installed to counteract terrorism) to find laptops, cameras, diskmans etc to steal.

Yes! More horrifying than exposing you're hd to x-rays is the notion of exposing your hd to luggage handlers!
