First off, I know there is a thread running right now about the ever-popular power supply chirp, but I have a squeak/chirp coming from my upper rear exhaust fan (DP 1.8 G5).

I came on here quite a while ago asking about this and someone here gave me a Mac part number to a new fan unit. I called Apple and of course "they had never heard of this problem" (and wouldn't expand on the supposed problem), but he took the part number and $40 later I had a new fan assembly.

Problem was solved....for a few months, then the squeak came roaring back. It's very intermittent, but incredibly annoying since I use my machine 8+ hours a day (and now even more annoying since I recently moved the G5 on top of my desk).

Anyone else have the fan that squeaks? To determine if the sound was coming from the fan, I simply stuck a paint brush in the fan and the sound immediately stopped. Let go and the fan kicks right back in....then squeaks like hell...sometimes.

I guess the only solution would be if anyone knows whether or not Apple has addressed this with an updated fan unit. Anyone know?

And yes I have taken my machine apart and carefully cleaned the fans with compressed air, etc. Still the same result.

Thanks for any input.

I got the exact same problem. Using a 2.3 dual. Like you said, it's intermittent. In my machine it's starting usually after a few hours.
My impression is it's the ball-bearings in those fans. I haven't contacted Apple yet - I somehow expected them to say just what you report.
I was wondering if it's possible to access the ball bearings of the fans? Maybe grease them a bit? Replacing a $40 fan every couple months is clearly not an option.

Best,

rev a 2x2, my fans do this intermittently as well. it comes and goes. it's been gone for weeks. I think it's temperature related, as it's done it much less now that it's warmer.
If engineers ruled the world, the trains might not run on time, but they'd go really fast, and when they derailed, would explode and kill thousands!

I had this squeak from my G5. It was the video card fan. It eventually died and I had to replace the fan.

I have the same problem, I am using a Dual 3.0gHz Mac Pro tower and use it 5-8 hrs as you do. This is a very annoying problem since I use my machine mainly for audio production.
