I am currently studying abroad in Germany, and I decided to buy an external german keyboard for my US iBook. The keyboard is for windows and the brand is Vivanco. It works pretty well, but a few keys aren't working right. Since the command and alt keys are in reverse order on Mac keyboards and windows keyboards, I have a problem. On german keyboards, the alt button to the left of the space is an "AltGr" key that is used to type various symbols such as @ or . However, when I use this keyboard with my mac, I cant use the AltGr key combinations to get symbols. When I try to use it, I get some other symbol than the one printed on the key. I already have OS X set to the german keyboard layout. Thanks in advance.

Don't expect it to behave like a PC keyboard, expect it to work like a Mac one.

The order of the keys on a PC keyboard, when connected to a Mac (starting at the space bar, moving left) is usually Option, Command, Control. You'll use the Option key to make extra characters.

Also be sure to familiarize yourself with the Key Caps program (in the Apple menu in OS 9 and earlier, in the Applications folder in OS X 10.0-10.2, and in the Keyboard menu as "Show Keyboard Viewer" in OS X 10.3), which shows you what happens to the keyboard as different modifiers are pressed.
