Dude, everyone else here got it via Software Update about a week ago.

Ok, maybe not. I'm sure it'll be out very soon.

have you read this?

"According to reports already present on Internet websites, the Tiger system update sits at build 8C44. This appears to indicate that only four or five complete compiles of Mac OS X 10.4.2 have been made over the past two weeks -- typically a telltale sign that development is nearly complete and extensive quality assurance measures are in motion. In its earlier stages of development, it's believed that Apple was compiling the software on average of once each business day. "

hopefully soon.

It certainly has been a long wait. And the impatience has something to do with how much it is purported to fix, I think. It may just be the most significant point point OS X update ever ... well, here's hoping anyway.

I like that writeup of 8C44, but they've said pretty much the same about the last three or four builds of it, so I might need a little more convincing. Either way, I've been expecting it before the end of the week for about four weeks now, so I won't be too surprised if/when it doesn't make it before the end of this one .

I had the same issue, then I changed the video bandwidth settings from "No limit" to 1mbps and lo and behold, I could connect, albeit, it seems blocky at times.

Worked great under Panther with my 9 mbps cable connection as verified at broadbandreports.com. But Tiger borked it bad. Try that tweak I mentioned to see if you can at least connect.

If .4.2 does what it sounds like it should, we may never need another point point update again ... but of course I guess that won't stop the craving .

All that means is that they know the bug exists, it'd been reported before. It doesn't mean that the bug is fixed, unfortunately.

Yeah, and unfortunately, their tight-lipped tracking system doesn't give the "verified/fixed" status to duplicates once marked as such on originals.

So, only the first person who submitted it will know if it is indeed "verified/fixed"

I know that. But the fact that it was unresolved one way or another for so long gives me hope that it's been fixed.

I've had the Safari window problem as well. Basically sometimes after you open a new window and it cascades down, Safari gets delusional and thinks that's where you want the first one opened the next time you open Safari, i.e. it saves that to the .plist file.

I have been getting around that when it happens - I created a folder and pasted the numbers for the window bounds from the .plist as its name. So now I just have to open the .plist, paste in those numbers and save it to fix it, albeit temporarily. But it seems to work for quite a while usually.

To be more specific, the property is called NSWindow Frame BrowserWindow Frame and the sequence of numbers for the window size I like is 49 148 925 598 0 0 1024 746 - I don't know quite what they all mean though .

I think MartiNZ described it accurately.

It usually appears to be after some idle time of not using Safari or after sleeping that it will have cascaded downand to the right of where I want the window position to be. I've done the normal routines and yet it still keeps reoccuring. Glad to hear I'm not the only one though. I really hope this is fixed.

I have the same problem with Safari not remembering its window size. I usually just delete that value, the NSWindow Frame BrowserWindow Frame one, from the .plist file, save, and restart Safari. It will usually work for a couple days, and then stop working again.

Right on! Panther rocks! I can't wait for 10.4.2 because of iChat A/V bugs to be fixed.

Yeah, Apple has the worst, most buggy software around... except for all the competing software out there.

When I think "buggy," I think of my work PC, not my Mac.

(OK, the Safari window positioning thing does irk me somewhat, but still.)

I also found the Safari window positioning very irksome as well, but I found an answer. It costs a little bit, but its totally worth it.

What I never understand about these bugs, is how do they slip through developers? I mean, do they really not notice this stuff? Doesn't Steve Jobs himself use a mac for his personal computer and get pissed at these bugs too?

I don't get it.

There aren't really that many bugs. And the ones that do exist probably don't plague Steve Jobs too much.

Fusion: It's a matter of triaging bugs. No organization has the resources to fix all the bugs in their software, so they pick which ones to fix based on a combination of importance, time-to-fix, and available expertise. The other issue is that many bugs only appear under certain odd conditions, or on certain machines.

That was a joke, right?

I personally have 3 open that are state "open", 3 that are in "duplicate", and 4 that are in "closed"

I didn't know there was `public' access to Apple's bug database.

It's available with a free ADC account, so I suppose that means it is available to the public.

I imagine some bug reports contain classified information or something. I'd also love to see all the reports, or at least all the reports related to the ones I've filed.

They stopped public access after the PPP.kext_hanging_the_computer_everytime_you_connec t_bug fiasco; i.e. people got more and more irate as little explicit progress was made.
