I have an older iMac G5 that has the internal modem. We use it at my office to send and receive faxes. It has worked great, but lately it has been hit or miss on it working. I went to buy USB Modem and plugged it in and installed drivers. We can use it to send out faxes, but it will not pick up faxes.
I think I need to disconnect internal modem - What do you think?
If so can I disconnect it and how? I have opened the back to upgrade RAM in the past so I have no problem doing that. I just don't want to screw anything else up.
Thanks for the help. I have been looking everywhere for an answer and did not find it.

I don't think it's the internal modem causing you problems. What software are you using for incoming faxes? I think PageSender is the best fax software for OS X.

If you *do* want to disconnect the internal, it's a small board to the right of all the I/O ports. It's a card covered in black plastic stuff. You'll need a torx #6 to undo the two screws holding it down.
It shouldn't *hurt* anything to disconnect it, but I have no idea if it will solve your problem.

Big Mac, I have been using OS X regular fax setup under Print/Fax. The faxed worked fine for about 1.5 to 2 years and just started working intermittently the last 6 months.
AKcrab, Thanks for the info. I will probably try to remove it and see if the usb modem will function properly since I have already purchased a new one.

Built-in faxing was very unreliable when I first tried it (probably Panther), so I bought PageSender and never looked back. I'm betting it's the built-in driver and not the modem that's at fault.
