After installing Panther one of our G4s - 733mhz - the second monitor, run from a PCI ATI card, won't do anything besides 640 x 480 at 256 colors.

Has anyone heard of this?

What kind of Panther upgrade? Sounds like a clean or archive install, and Panther does not have the drivers for the PCI card. Get the latest drivers for that card and install them, it should solve the problem.

640 x 480 x 60Hz is a safe mode the system falls back to when it's not sure how to handle that graphics card.

There is a similar thread in the OS X forum:

PCI Card not supported in Panther?

I have mine working fine now, I have no idea why it does now.

EDIT:

Oh, I think Apple disabled support for some older cards. Try VERBOSE booting and see if you don't get a message about video to old or something.

I'm using XPostFacto, and can enable a hack, but the first time it didn't seem to work properly.
