In Photoshop go to "Save For Web..." instead of just "Save." This will give you all the options you need.

ImageReady is better, since you can preview how it looks as you change the file size dynamically.

uhh, i think the "save for web..." option is powered by image ready. at least photoshop cs does it anyway. not sure about other versions. when i save I get live updating.

You can do that in Photoshop. After you select 'save for web' you can view the original image, optimized, 2-up, or 4-up. This has been in Photoshop since version 5.

i have foind that if you export a .png out of photoshop and then open it up in preview and export it out of there as a jpe (options-> 100% but make the bit size like 8500 or 9000) that that works reliably for me.

It's 20K... a little too hefty.

Oh, that's why I still saw the tags
I just use gif's instead. I was thinking about something though: could I use the same thing MindFad does with his sig for text? I was thinking you could just have a narrow strip the size of the standard text and have it update new quotes. Then I wouldn't have to change it.

About half of the US and about 80% of Europe is still on 56k. Despite what Voodoo tells you, dialup is not dead.

For getting your sig size down: If you use PNG, run it through pngcrush. That usually nets a 10% or so reduction for me, depending of course on the details of the image.

I would like to apologize on behalf of all the high-speed internet people. I have chosen to keep my sig small, the size of the old regulations... just for you slow ass 56k people.

I'm keeping mine small because I think it looks better. The new dimensions don't add anything, in my opinion.

Yes they do. I'd love a 70x225 dimension. It all depends on your:

I said "in my opinion."

In my opinion, your sig is pug fugly. Not just ugly, and not just fugly, but pug fugly. Not to mention its idiotic message.

Yours looks bad too.
I don't even know what the hell your small lil sig means! Besides, it's also a Metallica album, well the art is. You hate it because you're a liberal.

Oops, my mistake: European broadband penetration to reach 20 per cent this year. They actually don't say what what percentage of internet users are on broadband vs. dialup.

Don't bother, just use SuperPNG since you'll be in PS or IR anyway.

I recommend 'Save For Web' in PS, you can see the quality and file size, all you need ...

I don't use Photoshop or ImageReady, and when I did I got poor results with SuperPNG. Maybe I didn't tweak it enough, but the fact remains that I don't use those apps. pngcrush isn't a plugin, so I'm not tied to any one app.

For the reports: finished one first sig last night (yes, the Photoshop "save for web" options worked great!). Thanks guys and gals

next prob: registered a free Angelfire webspace account, loaded the sig up, copied and pasted the image location, but instead of my sig only a "hosted by Angelfire" logo showed up. Does Angelfire not permit direct linking (or whatever its called)?

Hey, I'm just offering other solutions people may not have heard of. I use Graphic Converter.

well, depending on what "kind" of sig you want to do, you might like to try either a .jpg, .gif, or .png format.

anything that involves a larger "color depth" you will probably find that .jpg compression gives you the best quality/size ratio. only a few colors, .gif is probably the kind of compression you want to use. you can always try .png as well (sometimes it's a good middle of the road solution).

if you don't like the results you are getting with ps/ir try an app called "fireworks". it's really good for making web graphics.

hth.
