I just bought a new iPhone today and don't plan on activating it until October 5 when my current contract ends. Can I still use the ipod and wi-fi internet without the phone being activated? The guy at the apple store says I cant but I always thought you could. Can someone please confirm. Thanks in advance.

You can not.
When you turn the phone on, the first thing that pops up is, "Need to activate" or something along those lines.
If you scroll to "use" the phone all you are able to do is make emergency calls or something I believe.
Why are you waiting for your current contract to end? Are you on a different carrier?

If you remove the SIM card, I believe you get some limited functionality. Not positive on that though, but really there's no harm in trying.

Nope, you need to activate with iTunes first. Or use one of the community tools to trick it... :o)
