I have seen all these nice setups in the PowerMac picture thread and PowerBook picture thread. I am going to be a bussiness major, but like doing photoshop and might take some graphic design classes next semester.
And I was just wondering what your professions are and what you do to need these nice computers and nice setups? Or if you are in school still what is your major and what do you plan to do. Just wondering if everyone is an art major/designer or bussiness like me?
Thanks for any responses.

Currently I work as Art Director in a small agency. They have their own G5's that I work with, so I use mine for my own small business. Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, etc...
'Need' is a big word. More like 'want' to me ...

Yea it is more like want than need, because most people probably dont need the best out there. They just want to have the best because they can. I could probably do the photo stuff I want with an iBook but I want a PBook so I can do more if I decide to later on.

ALot of people who use macs tend to be art-design-photo-publishing oriented.
One reason is that they just work and offer high productivity, another is that the major software applications used in these fields have been heavily optimized over the years and tend to run very very well on macs. Also as a sidenote, people in these fields tend to appreciate the solid construction, stunning industrial design, and hardware/software integration that macs offer.

You can run practically all business apps on macs very well also, and if absolutely necessary, you can always run windblows-only apps on your mac using VirtualPC
Personally I find it hilarious that you have the hots for my gramma. Especially seeins how she is 3x your age, and makes your Brittney-Spears-wannabe 30-something wife look like a rag doll who went thru WWIII with a burning stick of dynamite up her a** :)

I've never heard of "bussiness".. is that anything like business?

A lot of web developers (like myself) who are heavy into the Unix-end of things (like myself) have Macs, as do Unix developers/computer scientists, people in the sciences, journalism, telecom.

The Mac isn't dominant in the business world now, largely due to specialized and/or custom produced business software written for Windows (as well as price, and all of the other usual sorts of arguments). However, as a business major, if you are interested in IT, you might want to learn about Linux too.

As soon as Linux is "good enough" to start replacing Windows, and it is otherwise feasible to make the move, it will. You can't beat free and secure with a ton of support and open source options.

Sales Engineer. I have to bend the rules quite a bit to use my PB for my job, and in many ways, it'd be easier if I just used the Dell they gave me.

But I just can't.

retired engineer, now genealogy researcher

By the way, Extend provided math modeling on Macs and National Instruments sold a real-time monitoring system that works on Macs. (The pc version would not run in background.) I used Apple Works spreadsheets because they did NOT have math errors and did NOT randomly change the user interface at every revision. Long ago, we used a powerbook with an extra battery pack as a real time flight data recorder. sam

Graphics and layout monkey for a book publishing company.

My official title is "Spec Artist"

But I like "Graphic Monkey" better. Sounds less pretentious.

I think I am going to have them put an ingraved sign on my office door that says just that.

I'm the Network Admin for a large privately owned business in NC. We have over 3000 employees, but only 200 desktops and 9 main servers on the network, and I support it all myself along with 4 programmers. There's not a single Mac in the whole place (besides my personal laptop), it's all Windows and Unix (SCO) based.

That's why I think it's funny that the James troll that's been hanging around here lately says stuff about Windows and IT people not using Macs. I create and support Windows networks for a living, but I still use Macs at home.

Molecular Biologist / Immunologist.

At the moment work in research but am thinking about switching (selling my soul) to a pharma company in sales (get a car, $$$$ and paid trips abroad at least 4-5 times a year). But I'm still not sure if that's what I want to do.

That's pretty much my work environment. I work in the corporate headquaters of a nationwide company. I do network administration, user, and application support locally and nationwide. I enjoy the work, but i don't enjoy the fact that i have to sit here on a windows machine.

I only have macs at home.

College student. Computer engineering or computer science. (At my school, *nix usage is respected, but not encouraged. So Mac and Linux users get along fine, but the 'standard' is Windows.)

Before that, I worked at a custom software development firm. We used and developed for Windows, Linux (for server side apps and point-of-sale systems) and Macs (Web work, and because one of our clients manufactured equipment for the graphic design industry).

IT flunkie working at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. I am the lead tech that runs all the AV/multimedia equipment in the galleries and other public spaces. The only thing we don't run is the peformance theatre. There are two theatrical AV techs that run that space.
