Ok,

I hate Dell, and having to stare at the Dell logo might be too much for me.

but

Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW 24-inch Wide Aspect Flat Panel LCD is $899
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/P...=&refurbished=

and Apple's 23" is $1499

What am I getting for 600 dollars and is there another non-apple model that is a good deal?

Either eat rice for a month or so and pony up the extra $600 for the Apple display, or get over the issues you have with the Dell logo and save some money. From all the reviews I've read, the two displays are pretty much neck-and-neck in performance, so the only thing the Apple display has over the Dell is cool styling. Is that styling worth $600 (and a slightly smaller viewing area)?

Sorry to sound harsh, but I really get tired of people ragging certain companies because they are "not Apple." If you really want Apple products for everything, you'll just have to put up with their prices.

Pull the panel apart and spray paint the thing silver. I had a friend of mine do that with his, he had a friend who is an auto paint specialist paint the display a reflex silver for him. Looks pretty cool. That being said, I'm a sucker for asthetic and I got a good deal on a 23" Aluminum display for $1100, so for the extra $300 to match my G5, it was worth it.

they are fugly but they are cheap (dollar wise-they seem to be of good quality). if this coupon had brought it down to $800 or so I would have ordered 2.

oh i know that but i figured dual 24" lcds would be less fugly lined up side by side.

I was all set to buy a 30" apple but frankly to get 2 24" for half the cost (almost) would allow me to spend the extra $1500 on some software i need.

i dunno... i knew someone that had a pair of russian cars...

i know what you mean though. i use a 23" CD at work an it's almost too big and i don't particularly care for the extra width. i prefer one huge monitor then a smaller monitor on the side for folders and communication windows.

Well don't buy the 2405FPW for $899 -- last month it was $770 or so. The price will go lower again.

Justification is for losers. The other day my CEO walked past my desk and told me to get an Apple 30".

I have the coolest CEO ever.

You're getting nothing, and losing out on portrait mode, picture-in-picture, and vga/dvi/component/composite/svideo inputs.

If you want something *better* than the Apple 24", get the HP 24" L2335. We just got one at work and the image quality is amazing. Way better than the Dell and Apple display, and on par than the 21" Samsung 213T. If I didn't get such a good deal on the Dell 2405fpw, I would have gotten the HP.

If price is an issue, just get a Dell 2405fpw. I could not be happier with my Dell 2405fpw.

I use techbargains.

Like you, I'm in no hurry, either. I'll get one the next time it's $780 or so or cheaper.

I am also thinking of getting the Dell 2405, but have been holding off for 2 reasons:

First, like others here I am waiting for the next deal as I have until October to get my new LCD.

Second though, I have been put off bysome of the things I have read on the internet forums (including Dells own) about a defect with these units that causes them to produce a high pitched squeal after a couple of hours of use.

Those that already own these Dell units - have you experienced this?

I wil be using it probably 12hrs plus a day, and a noise like this will be the type of thing that will drive me insane.

Any thoughts?

Plus is there any other unit worth considering in the 22" plus range - Samsung? HP?

Thanks for all your help

Unless I am mistaken, Dell sometimes has fire sales over long holiday weekends. Just an FYI.

I just got that Dell 24" monitor.

It kicks ass. Not one dead pixel on it, and it has USB slots AND memory card ports to boot. Composite, Component, S-Video, VGA, and DVI input for $899.

Compare that to the Apple display for $1499 and I'd say you're a fool to get the Apple display.

I bought the Dell 2405 for AU $1438 ($1089 US?). Apple 23" costs AU $2300.

I can see one dead pixel if I look hard for it - otherwise ... it's absolutely bloody brilliant. :-)

WoW at 1920 x 1600 rocks, so does working in Alias Sketchbook, iPhoto, iMovie, watching HD movies ... just bloody brilliant - did I mention that already? ;-)

Physically, it's a nice solid build.

Just bought one for $899. with tax $984. (But i found 40$ in my coat so i am going to deposit that and pretend I payed $944

Was going to buy two of them but the coupon is limited to one so I picked up one now and when they go on deep discount again I'll pick one up then too.

Eggcellent!

I love the monitor to death, especially for playing games. I posted some 1920x1200 pix of WoW on the Games forum.

The solution is simple...

Convince yourself that you actually need the 30" Cinema Display, for which there is no cheaper Dell alternative. Suddenly you're not faced with the dilemma and can buy the Apple display without guilt.

It's a perfectly obvious solution, right?

I was going to buy a 30" but i just could not pull the trigger; I'll pick up a couple of 24" and spend the rest on some software i need.

If i bought a 30" and the green speckles showed up I would be depressed...

next year the price and quality will be worth it to me.

After getting my 2.7 G5 my master plan was to get a 30" and TWO 23" Apple Cinema Displays (I've grown accustomed to three displays - have used three for over two years now and once you go three-way you never go back )
However, with all the color problems with the Apple 23" displays I altered my plan and just grabbed two Dell 24s for $899 each. I gotta say these things kick ass. Two of my previous displays were SGI 1600SWs, which I always considered to be among the best and brightest screens I'd ever seen. The Dells blow the 1600SWs outa the water. Not even close.
Now I'm in saving and scrounging mode to slap a 30" in between the Dells. After that I will kneel before my setup, bow my head and pray to it.

To dislike Sinatra is a sign of highly questionable taste. To dislike the Beatles is a serious character flaw.
