IGN just completed their updated list of the top 100 games of all time. Obviously, the list is completely subjective. Any comments? Omissions?
Personally, I count the Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Wind Waker, Mega Man, and Final Fantasy Tactics as omissions.

#91 Virtua Tennis for the Dreamcast still rocks. I have a dreamcast set up at work so we can play 4 person Virtua Tennis during lunch. I would rate this as the most suprizingly fun game I've everplayed. I mean, how fun can a tennis video game be? I thought it would suck. Bought it used a couple of years ago on a recommendation and was floored by what multiplayer fun it is!
#77 Archon. Solid fun, wasted many years of my youth playing this one. EA made the best games back then.
#54 Panzer Dragoon Saga. One of my all time favorite RPGs. Sweeping in scope with a storyline that was amazing. Nice blend of real time with turn based combat. Killer killer game. Unfortunately, I gave mine away. Thing goes for around $150 on EBay, last I checked.

Well, as a tennis player, fan, and coach, I think they can be loads of fun. IMO, Mario Tennis is slightly better than Virtua Tennis. Top Spin for the Xbox is also fantastic.

Mario Tennis is great. Get four people together, and you can play for hours.

Still a very nice broad range list of games.

HA! Cool. They had 3D0's return fire in there. That game is a total BLAST!
Cool . Deus Ex was in there too! Metal Gear Solid. Ico.
All in all though, the list has a ton of games that are just freaking lame and for hardcore geeks only. Like:
Xcom, ufo defense. WTF? Who even played that?
Resident Evil 4? Why? Maybe the original one, but they just get boring and the same old crap after that.
Wave race?! Pffft. !??!?!! WAVE RACE!??!?!?!
Grim Fandango? Panzer Dragoon Saga? Advance wars? Lakers VS Celtics and NBA playoffs? Wha?
I mean, why mention crap like htat when they totally excluded MARATHON, or SPECTRE or what about Lemmings?!?! Loderunner!?!? Spy Hunter? Mortal Combat?
Plus they mention like EVERY SINGLE final fantasy game, which is just freakin' weak. Sure, some weirdos are into that game, but why not just mention the series?

I'd suggest checking it out when the PS2 version comes out. It is a complete turn for the series, and nowhere near the "same old crap."

I'll check it out, but I'm not expecting much. Also, no mention of the original silent hill.... that was pretty ground breaking, I thought. The fog, the environment, the .... whole feel of the game. Oh yeah, no mention of NEED FOR SPEED?!?!? WTF!? Or Virtua Racer, that polygon based racing game in the big yellow ferrari box? Heck, they didn't even mention pole position!

One's I'm disappointed in not seeing:
M.U.L.E. by EA (around 1984ish, in the EA hayday). Amazing four player game for the Atari 400 and 800. Needed a computer with 4 joystick ports to really enjoy this one. This ranks probably as my second favorite game all time.
Seven Cities of Gold by EA. Yah, lots of love for EA here. Same time period (mid 80's). Explore a randomly generated new world and have to manage your scare resources and either appease or destroy the native people to gain gold. Great game of exploration!
Sundog! Sundog! Sundog! FTL's masterpiece! Okay, so Dungeon Master was good, but in my book, it was no Sundog. When X2 becomes stable, I'll pick it up and see if it is close to my beloved Sundog.
Dandy.
No one here even has a clue about this game, I am sure. Gauntlet is Dandy's direct descendent. Exact same game concept, both released by Atari, etc. Dandy was way primitive. The whole game was created using redefined character sets. Instead of Gauntlet's elf or barbarian or valkyrie or wizard, Dandy had big numbers. 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 would be running around the screen shooting huge arrows at generators. Being redefined character sets, Dandy was one of the first games I can think of that had a level editor. Save a dozen linked levels to a 5.25 floppy and trade your levels with a friend. It absolutely was a groundbreaking game. Any top down multiplayer that is similar to Guantlet owes it's existence to Dandy. In all my years of gaming (started with Pong), nothing grabbed me like Dandy did at that time.
Fools Errand wasn't on there either. That game ranks very high with me. Interesting list, and very good topic.

Plus they mention like EVERY SINGLE final fantasy game, which is just freakin' weak. Sure, some weirdos are into that game, but why not just mention the series?
Because the series has games of varying quality. I'd only include VI (still the best), Tactics, IV, and VII (in that order).
As a fan of RPGs, I'd have to say Lunar and Dark Cloud 2 are seriously underrated. I'm a little surprised Lunar didn't make it.

It's nice to see a NES game at #1. I do think FF1 is better than Super Mario though.

Marathon should be there somewhere, and what about Apeiron? Seems anyone I know who tried the game was hooked for hours on end. I loved playing Oni too, but you can only fit so many games in the top 100.

Missing in action: Monkey Island 2 (even though they did include Day Of The Tentacle, my all time fav.), Lemmings, Escape Velocity, GTA: San Andreas, Tiger Woods and World of Warcraft. Apart from Tetris and Civ 2 I don't agree with the top ten at all.
And come on. Mario at first place? Super Mario World and the first three sonic games were plenty better!

Not a bad list, reminds me of Next Generation's list many many years ago. Anyone remember that magazine before it became crap? It was real intelligent video game discussion (the opposite of Imagine's Game Players magazine... which itself was quite something).

Final Fantasy Tactics should be in there, it was (and is) considered one of the best, deep, RPGs ever. And the music was way ahead of it's time.
Nice to see Ico, I loved that game, it was a rare breath of fresh air when it came out, and I am looking forward to it's (unofficial) sequal when it ships this fall.
Besides the FFT omission, it's a nice rounded list. Where is the original Zelda? Also no MMORPG's? They certainly are a giant part of gaming....

I know! Even Daryl Hannah was addicted to the Legend of Zelda. I still count that as my all-time favorite NES game. Remember finding the Master Sword? The second quest after you beat it? Good times, good times...
I also can't believe they completely ignored Metroid. That game's so good they've re-released it twice on GBA in the last year or so.

I remember. Did you ever play Keen Dreams? I didn't find out about that one for a while.
The first time I learned about cheat codes was with those games. It took me a few years to figure out what 'Boss mode' was supposed to mean too.

Glad to see Homeworld, Tribes, Pirates, Star Control 2, and Bionic Commando in there. But seeing Super Mario 64 at #5 disgusts me. I absolutely hate that game.

Keen Dreams! Wow! I always remember Keen 4 as being fave though. Wasn't that the last one? I think they're all on an old Wearnes 486 thats used as a glorified door stop in the office. I might go turn on that old rust bucket and have a play...
But that list is a pile of pants.

No, Ms. Pac Man is there (at #20). It's a better game in every way, but you could argue Pac Man deserved a mention as well.

No, by your definition every game that spawned a genre should be mentioned, even Pong. But as you'll see from that list most are examples of the best the genre (or a series) has to offer.
And admittedly, apart from retro-coolness, many of the arcade games of yonder times are now dull as rock-paper-scissor.

Um, when did I say that? I said you "could" argue for Pac Man's inclusion. Despite it being one of the biggest (if not the biggest) games in history, I wouldn't have included it. It loses points for being a rough draft for Ms. Pac Man.
But as you'll see from that list most are examples of the best the genre (or a series) has to offer.
For the most part, I think they only included the "best" of games from a series that are similar. I think that's why they left out the Legend of Zelda (similar to A Link to the Past) and Metroid (Super Metroid) but not the Ocarina of Time and Metroid: Prime. FWIW, I still would've included them, because they're still excellent.
And admittedly, apart from retro-coolness, many of the arcade games of yonder times are now dull as rock-paper-scissor.
That's true, but there are quite a few that still hold up today. Ms. Pac Man is one of them.

No, it's just that Nintendo only has very few awesome games. Super Mario? Sure. Super Mario 3? Sure. Legend of Zelda? Sure. Goldeneye? Sure.
But Return Fire for 3D0 was an incredible game, if you haven't played it, they did make a version for the playstation one. It's one of the best 2 player video games ever.

Cool. I'm looking to the day I can get a recommendation like that and go to an iTunes-like site, download the game and play it on whatever platform I choose.

I think they make a mistake in including games released in the last 3 years or so. I mean, how can judge a particular game's effect on the industry, lasting popularity, or nostalgic value after so short a time? A truly great game, like say, Metroid, is one that you wouldn't mine firing up an emulator to play 10 years later.
Anyone besides myself remember Zillion on the Sega Master System (which was techologically superior to the NES, btw)? It was absolutely AWESOME. As good as Metroid, IMHO. The problem was, there weren't a whole lot of SMS owners out there to play, and remember it.
