I kinda like the dots. The design sucks, but the idea is great.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

it's not the dots. an admin edited the cookies this afternoon.
it should be fixed now. clear your cache (or delete your cookie) and let me know if you still have problems.

Hi guys,

Unfortunately, this bug is because we use Boa to serve our images from a different server. To support the news comment authentication system, i had to set VB to implement domain wide cookes (*.macnn.com) rather than forums.macnn.com only. For some reason, this causes a problem with www4.macnn.com, which runs Boa (see www.boa.org). I have filed a "cookie" bug with the developers, because it seems to be related to size (prolly not frequency) of VB cookies--though I'm not sure. I know users have mentioned some unusually large cookies with VB. The weird thing is that I have never experienced this problem. I have also emailed the developers of Boa to see if there is a quick solution (setting Boa to ignore cookies, etc.).

There is another bug with VB with the bbthreadview cookie to which new stuff gets added but old not deleted http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?threadid=172639, and when it grows too large the Boa bug kicks in resulting in the images not loading.

Thanks Moonray. I have filed a bug with VBulletin (and asked if it was fixed in 2.3.x.) We are still running an older version, so if it is (let's hope so), i will upgrade the board.

I contacted Jelsoft about this and they wouldn't help until we upgraded to the latest version, so we're working on the security upgrade right now.

We upgraded a few days ago, and I guess it hasn't really helped. At least we're in a better position to do something about it now, though.

I discussed this with mkbhatia and Demonhood the other day. We concluded that it's exceedingly unlikely that the error has anything at all to do with vB. The supposed explanation has to do with non-compliant cookies, but the image server doesn't request cookies to begin with, and problems with non-compliant cookies would not affect all browsers the same way. (Yet all browsers have the same problem with images.)

As such, we've decided to move the forum images onto an Apache server, which should not have this problem. This change will happen sometime soon.

You are not all right there. The server doesn't need to request cookies, they're automatically sent by the browser if it has any cookies for that domain. And the too long cookie which it has to receive doesn't fit into a buffer or something and lets it choke.

I'd be happy to tell more about how the Hypertext Transfer Protokol works if needed.

O MacNN, O MacNN,
The images are gone again.
O MacNN, O MacNN,
The images are gone again.
I see no circles, lines, or arcs,
Just lots of goddamn question marks.
O MacNN, O MacNN,
The images are gone again.

(Actually, it's working fine now, but it was doing this earlier at about 12:30, and I couldn't resist posting this little song. )

Hmmm....

After the move of the image server I emptied my Cache and deleted the bbthreadview cookie.

Ranking stars are beginning to disappear for me again:

http://www4.macnn.com/macnn/forums/tooki/mushrooms2.png
and
http://www4.macnn.com/macnn/forums/stars/gstar5.gif

currently gives me "400 - your client issued a malformed or illegal request".

Should I have deleted all Macnn Cookies?

some custom titles (like tooki's mushrooms) are still housed on the image server. i'll move those over eventually.

and every now and then a post will refer to the old location for the images. but i'm not sure why that happens. for the most part everything should now be on this server.
