Has anyone had the occassion to compare the noise production of the 20" intel iMac to the 17"? I have objective criteria from SPCR on the 17", I'd like to know if there is a difference in the step up to the 20".

I have a 20" and I can hardly hear it. My Dual 1.25GHz G4 was like being in a wind tunnel compared to my Intel iMac.

I have used a 17 inch iMac Core Duo for a Final Cut class at an Apple Store, and I couldn't even hear it that much when exporting 1080p video.

I've built very silent rigs in the past, and some of them have been at the office before taking them home. My finding is, that it's impossible to make any conclusions based on the perception of noise in a store or open(ish) officeroom.

I have an old 400mhz G4 which is absolutely the loudest computer I've ever heard. After changing the case and powersupplies fans to a Nexus silent 120mm and Panaflo L1A (80mm) it seemed inaudible at the office. At home it's barable but loud (these are pretty much the most silent fans you can get). The macbook pro I have now is louder then my old G4 powerbook (last 15" G4 produced), but still fairly silent. I read the SPCR article on the imac, and it was very positive. That really does say something, as they are extremly critical. I don't see any reason why the 20" imac would be louder then the 17" one, actually it should be even more silent (same components, but more area to dissipate the heat through).

I just setup a new (to me) refurb 20" CoreDuo. The thing is silent. Compared to my last 20" G5 Reb B, there is no noise. My G5 DP 1.8 was also noisy and this is not.

I have a 17, and use a 20, and both are as silent as each other. My iMac is in my bedroom, and I often go to sleep without turning it off, not intentionally, but I forget its on, and I can't hear it at all, hence I do not think to turn it off...
