I followed the reviews and based on those, Navigon seems to be slightly better loved. However, I've used a stand-alone tomtom for 6 years, knew the interface, liked the features and was confident I would not be disappointed. If I didn't know either, I would probably have gone Navigon.
I bought the traffic add-on and it's pretty damn good.

Yeah I bought the traffic add-on for Navigon.
Works well so long as you trust it and don't think you know better, like I did last week.

I think I will go with Navigon.
The iPhone 4 just arrived from FedEx. I am in the process of setting it up.

Indeed. I did the same thing, not listen to the forecast, and promptly got stuck in traffic.

iphone is set up and doing well. It makes and receives calls and all.
I need a case for it. Please suggest one. The options are confusing and too many.

Can you give us a clue as to what you want? If you keep the phone in your pocket then the rubberized ones tend to be annoying, but if you are outdoors a lot and drop your phone frequently then the rubberized ones might be a good fit. Do you want a waterproof case? Do you want a case that will accommodate a specific peripheral?

I always keep it in my pocket, so I guess no rubber. I don't hike much these days, so unlikely to need waterproof. I guess something to keep my greasy fingers from ruining the phone.

So with or without a screen protector? I had one on my old iphone but don't have one on my iphone 4 and don't mind. I think it helps protect against cosmetic scratches and maybe makes it easier to wipe away finger oils, but I don't see it as essential anymore.
Are you willing to trade bulk for protection?
Do you want a belt clip?

Yeah, but it doesn't do turn-by-turn navigation for those, only walking and driving sadly.

Ye olde TomTom one hasn't come off yet. And that's with my driving.

My old Garmin one almost never fell off. It would go months and months of being firmly attached.

I'm with stone on this. My Nuvi's mount is solid. I tend to use it on complicated or long-haul navigation tasks, and it's never budged. Additionally, it doesn't take long term attachment to keep the suction cup solidly in place. I take mine off the windshield as soon as I park, and the mount goes back on just as solidly. Maybe it's Garmin's suction cups that make the difference...

Navigon works well. A few things I don't like, but it mostly works well.
I noticed it does NOT come with traffic guidance to help me avoid jams. It's an add on for another $20 or so. Am I getting this right?

Im using TomTom and love it. I cant speak much for Navigon but can promise TomTom isnt a wrong choice. I suspect which ever one you go with it will be a right choice. TomTom allows users to send in corrections to errors and updates often. Its very accurate, works well with sending voice over my car deck with the music. Last time I compared the 2 was a year ago and I liked TomToms interface a little more between the 2. But they both have changed a lot since then.

What's TomTom's policy on map updates?

Updates it seems every month. They don't charge for it. They also update corrections move often then that.

My only complaint with TomTom is no Canadian traffic, but I don't know if Navigon has it either.

Two questions on Navigon:
1) How do I enter an intersection to travel to?
2) How do I scroll through the directions to a particular destination?

Two more questions:
1) Repeat of #2, from above
2) How do I upload R2-D2's voice, instead of the annoying British lady?

R2-D2 is just synth bleeps. Not sure that's useful.

No, bleep.
A "beep" is a shitty car horn.
Bleeps and bloops is what analog synths make.

Navigon doesn't do alternate voices on their iPhone app yet. They claim to be working on it, though. And the lady's voice isn't British. It's a bad version of Nuance's American female voice.
The British voice is a man.

The German version has a couple voices in an in-app purchase bundle.
I still have wonder about the sense in having analog synth bleeps and bloops do the announcements.

I noticed a bit of an annoying issue with Navigon. It keeps asking me for my password. It seems to happen more often if I receive a text message. I can type in the password, but that doesn't seem to change anything. I went to Navigon's website and their support section is essentially non-existent.
Thoughts? Ideas?

They have decent support on their Facebook page. if you have a Facebook account you should look at it.

Yeah I am running 182. This version was installed when I downloaded the app. Not sure why a virgin instal should have the problem. I'll deal with it when I get home. I'm right now in the middle of very rural Pennsylvania. It's very beautiful

That is very odd. They leave up far nastier posts so I'd be surprised if they deleted it on purpose. I've had good responses from them in the past. Try emailing [email protected]
EDIT: Note, I don't mean to say that I think that you wrote a nasty note. Just that they have had very angry posts that they've left up without complaint.
