That's right, keep playing the self-righteous buffoon. I just made a thread for conversation, my life doesn't turn one way or the other for lack of Playboy, it's just a thing I browse for 10 minutes each month. If that's not your type of thing, the door's over there, champ.

Oh lawd! Now you're going to say that tits have no place in car magazines.

The point I'm making is that it's not anybody's type of thing.....or at least anybody under 30. It's a relic of a past age - a different time.

I'm not saying it isn't good or enjoyable. And I'm not saying it wasn't an earlier time, a better time. But it was a time when many women would be hot to trot if you could promise the Playboy Mansion/grotto..... whereas now the reaction would be faint disgust and/or morbid curiosity.

This has literally be decades in the making. Your outrage seems puzzling and very out of touch.

I'm only familiar with stuff like the Pirelli Tire calendar, which I admit strikes me as also silly.

I'm just imagining some sewing or cooking magazine (stereotypical non-porn women's hobby mag) with page 3 or centerfold d!ckpix. Strikes me as both hysterical, and unhygienic. Imagine cutting a recipe out and on the reverse side... hahahaha. Imagine it being left out in hairdresser coffee tables, nurse's lounges, taped up in secretary cubicles (instead of garages, print shops, other male bastions).

Not that male cheesecake calendars etc don't exist (firemen, for some reason), but it also struck me as silly. You don't see kitchenware calendars with male models draped lovingly over blenders and marble countertops. I get the marketing, I do. It's how to sell to most men. But it made me feel uncomfortable in an otherwise all-male workplace to go into the print shop and find a girly calendar on the wall from an ink company. Depends on how explicit, of course.

"Outrage". Interesting choice of words. That projection doesn't seem to fit me on this matter, I'd frame it more as disappointment. "Anybody under 30"? I proudly admit I'm not under 30. As if that, largely sad, demographic is the only one that matters. You realize there are a lot of people >30 still kicking around, right?

As for being "out of touch". With society in the sorry state it is now and Social Justice in full bloom? Yes, that's pretty accurate, and I'm quite happy to be out of touch with that. Millennials.

When I used to read UK Stuff, I felt a little embarrassed, and would have to defend it with "no, it's a really good magazine, it just has random cheesecake pictures in it".

Does anyone remember the Mac graphic arts production magazine which was packed with cheesecake? I can't remember the name but I used to call it "MacSlut".

It's called Playgirl, and it's still being published (with dickpix).

Because of the implication the cheesecake factored into why I liked the magazine, when in reality it was my least favorite part. I'd have rather had the expense and page count dedicated to gadgets. That's why I was buying the thing.

Well, I was making a comparison to a men's hobby magazine (cars). IIRC, playgirl was straightup porn. No baking tips or fashion spreads.

It's about 50/50 I've heard, that arrives in a sealed pink bag each month and I just place it over in the wife's pile of stuff.

then you're 100% correct.

I see what you're getting at, I suppose I don't see much of a difference between an image of a beautiful nude woman and, say, a `63 split-window `vette. To me it isn't "problematic". Before the sexual revolution seeing a topless woman in public was scandalous, then it (almost) became normal, and now we're back to scandalous (for both women and men).

In digital form? Regularly. In paper form? Only a few (largely car mags that have very nice fold-outs).

Cosmo = Maxim, from what I can tell. It's been a while since I read Cosmo, and maybe I'm not accurate on Maxim, but neither of these are porn. Racy? Sure. But they walk the line. Mainly they consist of fiction/nonfiction articles, image guides (fashion, makeup/grooming/shaving tips) light gadgets (cool watches/phones/eyelash curlers). Both feature perfume / body spray ads that could make playboy look puritan, but are technically legit due to coverage of prime features.

I'm not surprised to find sexy ads in these.

Car and Driver though? Makes me giggle, imagining porn in other hobby magazines. Scrapbooking. Farming. Sewers Monthly. Model Airplanes.

Maybe it means a wider discussion of what a hobby magazine is... why is racy material ok in fashion mags, but so odd seeming in hobby mags? Isn't fashion a hobby? But fashion is more directly equated with personal appearance, which means sex appeal... Hmm.

Anyway.

I have a couple subscriptions left over from the days when we couldn't use electronic devices during takeoff/landing. Now that I can keep the phone/laptop out the whole time, there's no need, though the Harbor Freight coupons I get usually pay for the subscription.

This thread finally reminded me to go ahead and cancel the auto-renew on Popular Mechanics.

Can't say I read Car & Driver (or Motor Trend), they're like Consumer Report, testing and evaluating, not really a car hobbyist magazine. Anyway, I don't consider Playboy to be porn, either. The only people I know who do are evangelical types.

I read it regularly, but only because my best friend is the only mid-30s guy I know who actually has a subscription. It's washroom material during game nights at his man cave.

Shaddim's playing the old man yells at cloud, earlier time better time angle. The fact of the matter is that Playboy has been dying and irrelevant for almost a couple decades now, and is making some desperate moves to try and hang on. It won't work, but respect for trying anything I guess. Moving on.

That's usually the way Ferrari drivers park, didn't you know?

I don't, it's f-ing obnoxious as hell.

With the potential exception of StM, who apparently saves his mad shits for his friend's bathroom, I don't see people being in a position to challenge his claim.

I certainly can't. As I said, the last time I even looked at one was over 10 years ago.

The editorial policy (i.e. the articles) has been taking a "neo-progressive" slant.

And there you go. Another way the woman's purpose in the picture is expressly antithetical to the context of what's being pictured. Let's use a person as dressing.

And to be clear, it's not that it's cheesecake. If the context is "this is a hot woman", then she's not dressing anymore. She is the context.

Gotcha. "Sure" is one of those words which for me is losing the ability to be used neutrally.

Like "okay".
