Well, that's one way to punish those rogue iPhone unlockers who manage to use T-Mobile. Ugh.
-1 for free market competition.

I'm hoping this means improvements for AT&T's network, but it does suck that there will only be a single GSM carrier in the states. Wonder if the merger will be approved.

Anybody have a theory as to the utterly bizarre timing of the announcement?

I hope this doesn't work out like the sprint nextel merger. That was a disaster for sprint's network and they have only recovered in the last couple years.

Interesting.
Right now, T-Mobile's network doesn't support 3G on the iPhone, only Edge.
I wonder if existing T-Mobile customers will be able to tap into At&T's 3G network.
In other words: how long until I can use an non-jailbroken iPhone on with my T-Mobile SIM ?

Phrasing 1: I'd guess 18 months.
Phrasing 2: Never.

If they allowed it now, it'd encourage more customers to sign up for tmobile. Their customer base grows, then all of a sudden some activist tmo shareholder or institution wants more money for the buyout. They throw a fit, threaten to fight the deal or -- more likely -- lobby it to death in congress or with political pressure on the FTC and/or FCC.
at&t has every reason to fight tmo for the next 12 months.

Don't be surprised if this leads to higher rates.
On a much smaller scale, Fido was a 3rd carrier in Canada that was big enough to have decent national coverage, but was small enough to still require undercutting the big two, Rogers (GSM) and Bell (CDMA). Then Rogers bought Fido, and Fido's plans and rules got significantly crappier. Weirdly enough, the coverage got worse too in some areas, presumably because they deactivated some of Fido's towers. (Rogers had better rural coverage, as in Fido had zero rural coverage in some areas, but Fido had denser urban coverage in large Canadian cities which is why I preferred it.)

Are they being kept separate or will the names merge... AT&T&T(Mobile) ?
And does this affect T-Mobile in the UK and Europe at all? They're in the process of merging with Orange over here and rebranding as Everything Everywhere.
|
It'll be much easier if you just comply.

No. Deutsche Telekom is selling the US business to focus on its core markets. Upgrading the US network to LTE would cost too much, so they're cutting their losses.

That's another facet of the same thing (and it's only happening in the UK, btw - Orange and T-Mobile remain separate in other markets) . T-Mobile is "consolidating" to hold down investments.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

LOL, there is no escape. There will be less choice. It's the second coming of Monopolies. Guess what, we approved it in Nov 2010.

I would like to apologize for the misrepresentation in the thread title. I thought it would be a no-brainer.
Unfortunately, no-brainers still require brains, and are, as such, not to be expected from the telecoms industry.

Would not be surprised if they let all T-mobile customers keep their existing contracts (like with unlimited data on EDGE), but if they want to take advantage of the ATT 3G, they will have to start a new contract with ATT.

One possible problem with that: Boost Mobile is a subsidiary of Sprint, as in owned by Sprint..
