MobileMe web interface is down and I need to access it to download my presentation which I do in 41 minutes. Hopefully it'll be back up. Is anyone else here affected by this outage? The support site says all services are online, yet reading Twitter, a lot of people are having issues.

Service was luckily up for me in time. I've had so many issues with MobileMe... they always say it's my network configuration (which is all Apple devices at home), but I get problems at school too (like today). Any subscribers feel as if $99/yr is a ripoff for MobileMe? My problem is that it's become so engrained into how I operate, when it goes down I'm all messed up if I don't have my MacBook Pro with me. I'd kind of like a refund...

What's the "pregnant, engaged or moving to France" reference, out of curiosity?

Really, I didn't notice - since I very rarely link to stuff in dropbox, and I think that I deleted all links with my photos here.

What idiots. Not even an alias done to hide the change. You using the free dropbox or the paid one?

I can't justify paying for mobile me, I mean maybe it would be worth it, but my web hosting is cheaper, if I need to have my calendar sync with iCal and my iPhone I can use Google Calendar over exchange, I've got drop box for universal file sharing, I use gmail for email... I mean it's great for people like my mom... but, it's just too limited. If they gave me support for MySQL databases I'd probably consider it.

The free one (I'm using 34% of my 2.25 gigs). And since graduating, I use Dropbox almost exclusively for hosting photos.

I have a Dropbox account, but my only issue with it is that I like to save files directly to my MobileMe iDisk, which I can't do with Dropbox, at least that I'm aware of. Maybe a third party app exists for that?

Huh ?

Dropbox is a local folder that gets synchronized to the cloud in the background.
No third party app needed.

The best thing about Dropbox: you can save audi files on it, and then pull it up on your iPhone and listen to it. Heck, you can even upload files to your Dropbox via the web browser. It can't get more flexible.

I think mitchell means that he likes being able to directly save files to his iDisk mounted locally on his Mac.

Yeah, and turtle is pointing out you do that the same with Dropbox except there's nothing to mount. You save to a local folder that's being monitored by Dropbox. The file will then get synced to the cloud in the background. Done. No extra mounting required.

Yes, but that REQUIRES keeping a local copy of the file in the synced folder.

MobileMe has a local syncing feature (which keeps a copy of your iDisk on your desktop at all times), but you can switch that off if you want to.

Why wouldn't you want a local copy of a file on your Mac?

Because I really don't want to clutter up my Mac with that 4.8 GB zip file of a project I already have among my documents?

And that's really what I use iDisk for, apart from image hosting.

(except, of course, that iDisk appears to have a 4GB file-size limit... )

For file access, Dropbox is superior to MobileMe in every way.

I've just added on Packrat, a $3.00 a month service that gives me unlimited versioning. The ultimate in file insurance.

8GB flash drive FTW. I've had plenty of opportunities for such a device to save my bacon, both in school and work projects.

Where are you getting free MS Exchange access?

The Google CalDAV server you can use w. iCal has nothing to do with MS Exchange.

ZIP FILE.

I have the (non-zipped) project folders in my Logic folder, and backups on Time Machine.

Yep. Plus my Dropbox is synced to my work laptop, garage computer, and Mac Mini so I have multiple copies of everything important in multiple locations.

Mine isn't, won't be, and can't be.

Also, my projects folder is currently 25.69 GB.

I need that backed up, but not necessarily synced among various machines.

Projects I need to share go online in zipped format, for single-click-in-mail-downloadable goodness.

Just as an FYI, dropbox files come with a download link. Put file into public folder, right click to retrieve link, email.
