Adage has a breakdown here: http://adage.com/news.cms?newsId=42479

Likes? Dislikes? Failures?

Overall I thought the ads this year were very tame compared to years past, but considering the FCC flack, I'm not surprised. Both bud and ford apparently had spots pulled by the network at the last minute due to inappropriateness.

I kind of like the McDonalds Lincoln Fry campaign, conceptually its a bit weak but the execution is tops, the site is very 'complete'.

Career Builder replacing Monster was a big surprise for me, maybe its a sign of monster's pending demise? I hated their first monkey commercial, I felt they ruined it by forcing the tagline in about 'do you work with monkeys?' but they didn't mention it on the rest of the commercials, so it was forgivable.

Burt Reynolds vs the Bear/FedEx-Kinkos was hysterical.

The master card commercial with all the food brand icons was a horrible failure imo, it just didn't come together and was horribly animated.

for those interested: http://dyn.ifilm.com/superbowlads/

creatively speaking this was a weak year for the bowl ads. the car spots were terrible, no TERRIBLE.

the godaddy.com ad was mighty funny mostly because of how it spoofed the fcc's overreaction to last year's nipplegate.

the mastercard spot is a complete rip of the target ad done by kb&p, nyc. in other words, hack...

mbna - ****.

heineken pitt spot - blah. they usually do much better work.

mcdonald's lincoln fry...three months ago it would have been funny. now its just pathetic.

frito lay - mc hammer was funny.

fedex - is it just me or did someone replace the burt reynolds with an asian man? talk about your bad facelifts.

cialis - didn't make my knob hard.

careerbuilder.com - pure genius but the joke got old by the third spot.

silestone - lame

michelob - ugghhhhh...

msn search - why did they waste the money for the slot and produce that?

ameriquest - nice spots.

olympus - caca

bud - lots to talk about but most of it sucks. one good spot : designated drivere dance. also, anheuser busch gets the handjob of the year award for their troop spot it's all for g.w. bush.

more later...

As an ad guy, my favorite was the FedEx commecial about the essential elements for a SuperBowl commercial. I thought it was funny all the way through, but almost lost it when it got to the element of "Product Message" and right next to it said (optional). That was the funniest moment I saw during the entire broadcast.

I agree that was a nice spot but I'm still wondering when Burt Reynolds became Asian. Or was he all along?

The "optional" product message was an inside joke. A funny one at that.

I thought the cut was a little klunky.

Must say I'm a little amazed by all the folks that will come here to debate the pros and cons of contracts but they won't talk about the craft's biggest day the Superbowl.

What is this business coming to?

See, I didn't find the godaddy commercial all that great. I thought it was too easy a jab. I thought the unreleased budweiser spot was WAY more clever. ( http://www.budweiser.com/wardrobe_malfunction.html )

Bud lite did nothing for me, I didn't even really dig the designated driver dance.

God, how could I forget ameriquest? These were hysterical.

Pepesi/iTunes, I didn't expect much, didn't get much.

Muppets for Pizza hut failed

Am I the only one who is seriously disturbed by the quiznos baby?

I agree but 'Graphic Design' doesn't always just entail those in the corporate, mainstream advertising game.
I have unexpectedly quit.

But even to avoid the mainstream you must be knowledgable of what it is. An opinion comes with that perspective.

My view of the Bud designated driver dance is skewed by the fact that I've been charged with the same task in the past a DD ad. It's a tough challenge.

That Q baby is freaky.

iTunes sucked a$$.

Muppets put me to sleep.

Yes it wasn't was smooth as it could have been, but I was still impressed with the content Burt-San and all. It seemed to fit perfectly with so many conversations I've had with clients about ads.

And yes, the Quizno's Baby is the creepiest thing to come our way in a while. Just plain wierd. It's even scarier than "Mr. Six" from Six Flags.

My beef with the FedEx spot is simple. If you're going to give yourself such an open playground you had best make it REALLY GOOD. All the callouts should be wet-your-pants funny. They were'n'. In fact, most of 'em sucked.

I guess you are not aware, but what that ad depicts actually keeps happening in reality in airports all across the country almost on a daily basis.

It is not a political statement for g.w. bush to support the troops.

last year i flew over 100,000 miles. when you do that much traveling you spend a heap o' time in airports. i never once saw such a thing happen. i've read stories about it occuring here and there but it's not as widespread as one might believe.

that ad is more about politics than about selling beer.

i'll leave my political views out of this.

Ditto, of the rediculous number of airports I was in last year I didn't see that once either. Pure politics, but ultimately, does anyone care *that* much? Its the superbowl for christssakes, its all a patriotic wankfest anyway?
