I am unable to get Safari 4.1.3 to access HTTPS pages. I cannot do any secure web access at all. What would cause that? I am stuck with using Mac OS Tiger on my old laptop, so the latest version of Safari available to me is 4.1.3.
How do you tell what encryption protocols are being used by Safari? I could not find any reference to that in the menus or the preferences.

Could be outdated Certificate Authority (CA) certs in the OS, but what is happening when you try to access SSL protected pages? Are you getting an error message? What is that error message? This happens with all SSL sites, or just some of them?

I get an error page that says I am using HTTP protocol to talk to an HTTPS site. That has happened with all the secure sites that I tried, and they were a mixed bunch of different types of sites.

What is the exact error message, word for word?

The exact error message:
Bad Request
Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
Reason: You're speaking plain HTTP to an SSL-enabled server port.
Instead use the HTTPS scheme to access this URL, please.
Hint: https://www.startpage.com/

Weird... This doesn't make much sense. If there was an SSL handshaking problem you'd get an error message to this effect, this error message typically infers a server misconfiguration. Are you sure that you are not having the same problem on the same URL in a more modern browser? Are you being redirected somewhere else?

I have no idea what was going on, but the problem is now solved. As a last resort, I reinstalled Safari 4.1.3, and it now behaves normally.
