I am wondering how Apple will market the Mactels. Now they seem to push how much faster it is over a Pentium chip.

If someone walks into a store and see's an ok looking HP and a nice looking Mac both with the same chips in them is the OS and case enough to win people over?

Also Apple is very relaxed when updating it's hardware putting 8-13 months between product refreashes when PC's update to the latest chip all the time. Will Apples new hardware look dated with slower Intel chips yet cost more because of the case and OS?

I think that might be one of the issues they want to avoid in the future... so I don't think that will be the case.

Well, my Mac Classic 2 is a Mac. Its not got a PowerPC chip in it.

If only the internet existed back in the day of the transition to PPC. I think forums would mirror whats happening today.

Oh, and Amigia run on PPC. Yet they're not Macs. Go figure.

XBox360 runs on PPC but Microsoft's game console isn't a Mac.

For me, 80% of it is the pretty cases. Of the rest, hmm, about 15% is the OS and the remainder is how well the OS plays with the hardware without me fiddling with it. As someone mentioned in MacTel thread #3,141,592, the performance the user sees from the actual processors isn't that different if you're just doing normal, day to day tasks (email, surfing, word, the occasional Photoshop job, etc.).

But, yeah, just to reiterate, the cases are what do it for me

all of the above.

edit: and the fact that Macs didn't use Intel CPUs.

Another option "All of the above" would fix the situation equally well.

No it wouldn't as some people might have liked to chose two.

It's the Mac OS and its software (iPhoto, iMovie etc). Secondarily the style case.

It's all about the interface and ease of use. I didn't switch to the Mac 4 years ago because of the processor. It was because of OS X.

Might depend on whether or not Macs become cheaper.

The Mac OS and its software (iPhoto, iMovie etc.) and then pretty cases. I'm indifferent to the processor that is being used.

In all fairness, though, I like PPC better than x86, and yes I was hoping the rumor weren't true. And yes my next Mac will be iMac 2.0 GHZ (PPC) and then Darth Mac.

In light of recent events, I've actually been casually polling some "consumer" Mac users I know (that is, they have Macs at home; they don't use them to make their livings, or hang out on Mac fora). For them, the Mac experience is clearly about the OS ("Macs are easier to use, and they don't crash so much"), and the nice hardware. None of them have the faintest idea who made the processor in their machines. They had all heard that Apple was going to buy chips from Intel, but it didn't mean any more to them than if they'd heard that they were going to buy optical drives from Pioneer. For most users, it just doesn't register.

Hell, I've been using Macs since 1985, but until I started hanging out at MacNN I couldn't have told you that Motorola made the processor in my Cube.

Actually, at the time I bought my SuperDrive eMac it was the cheapest computer with a DVD-R drive in it. Nothing was offered in the Wintel world that could compete at that price point.

I bought my Mac because it was cheaper.

True enough. I'm sure though that with just a bit more creative thought that you could've made that possible within the current poll feature set.
